Amsoil oil and filters

hello all. Is it ok to use Amsoil 5w-30 year round in a 335i? Is that the factory recommended oil weight? Can BMW void a warranty if synthetic oil other than their oil is used? (assuming same weight). Are their any better oil filters than the factory filter? I used to use K&N filters in my old car. Much better than the stock filter. What is the oil change capacity?

The oil needs to meet BMW's (european actually) spec. Basically has to do with the amount of Phosphorus in the oil, as well as the weight/viscosity (5w30 is okay).

i use mobil 1 0W40...been working fine for me...but if you search you should have some threads about the oil ok to use on the 335i.

i personally haven't found any better oil filters then the stock ones, i've only purchase an oil filter once not from the dealer and to be it didn't look to be any better.

Look for oils with BMW LL-01 or LL-04 approval. The SAE viscosity ratings, in and of themselves, don’t tell you very much. The approved BMW oils will be a “heavy” 5W-30/0W-30 or “thin” 5W-40/0W-40. They will have an HTHS above 3.5, which American 5W-30s will fall short of.

Look for BMW LL-01 or LL-04 on the bottle, that is all that matters.

And at the risk of being attacked by the 4,325,876 Amsoil dealers, note their wording. “Recommended for” is NOT the same as being tested and approved.

I went nuts reading all the posts about which oil to use.

This post probably has the best info on oil plus a bunch of other service issues
