Misfire on Cylinder 3, oil in plug well - thoughts?
Hi All,
I have an ’09 335i with 128K miles. I started my car after it had been sitting overnight, and it started misfiring - SES light came on. ISTA showed a misfire in cylinder 3. I pulled the coil for cylinder 3 and it had a fair bit of what I assume is oil on it - very light yellow liquid. The plug well is dark with oil as well. All of the other coils and plugs look fine. I’ve cleaned up the valve cover as best as I can looking for cracks, and I don’t see any. The valve cover gasket was replaced before I bought the car, about 60K miles ago. I have 3 Index 7 injectors, and 3 index 9 injectors (the 9s were installed by BMW under the injector recall). Cylinder 3 has an index 9. I don’t see any visible oil leaks anywhere on the engine. After cleaning up the coil and the well, the misfire went away - so I’m at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. I filled a qt. of oil about 300 miles ago (technically the guy @ BMW did), so is it possible that all it is some spillage from filling oil last? |

Took it out for a drive today on the freeway, about 30 miles. No misfires, car drove great. Seemed to be due to some spillage from filling oil - hope this helps someone!
