Valve cover bolt extraction help

My buddy really f’d this ordeal up. Long story short, 2 valve cover bolts broke in the head. One is still sticking out about .5 in and the other is royally f’d and drilling out didn’t work. Im going to try and remedy this situation but what would y’all recommend?

yep you only really have two options as i would guess you have tried every thing else right

drill and tap a new thread or use a bolt extractor set easy fix either way your be drilling so watch out for the metal fillings if it was me i would be grinding down that bolt until it was nearly flush to give you a better chance of a decent pilot hole take your time no rush cover every thing up and have a vacume cleaner on the go to catch any metal fillings

or if you have enough meat on the bolt hack saw a slot and try with a wide wood chisel to unscrew it

Thanks for the input. For the stud sticking out, I was thinking about using a stemmed to create a slot and try to unscrew it with a flathead. Similar idea to what you said. For the hole, maybe just drill it out more and thread it or put some type of threaded insert into it.

The reason I suggest a wide wood chisel is that’s is thinner and wider than a flat head more you spread the area the less chance of the bolt snapping you could try once you have a pilot hole poring chemical Metal Adhesive in to the pilot hole insert a smaller steel bolt waiting for the chemical to set and this stuff really goes hard and unscrew this way me personally drill out and tap or bolt extraction method.


Also can I ask did the bolts snap when tightening the bolts or loosening the bolt ?

Drill them out mate no point to mess about now they were obviously very well seized up

That second photo, surrounding are is damaged, my assumption is that it would leak from those gauges.

We are going to see if it leaks. The gasket is to the right of the bolt hole in that picture and that is the topmost screw close to the oil filter. So I think it may be ok.

Don't worry about leaks, just add some gasket maker to the area and you'll be fine.

Just got done messing with it. Basically made no progress. The stud is fkn tight. I put some vice grips on it and it wouldn’t even budge. I had them tight af....

Try some heat on the one sticking up. Use patience and actually tighten a bit before trying to remove the bolt.

I actually had the same problem. This is what I ended up doing.

What I would try for the bolt that is still protruding is to weld on a nut that fits around the bolt and then use a ratchet to take it out

For the one that is completely snapped, I just drilled out the bolt using a Dremel. The hole was now too big for the standard vc bolt. I tried helacoiling it but it still leaked. So I ended up going to the hardware store and bought an screw and nut (as in the pic below).

This happened 2 years ago and still no vc leak to this date.

So I have an update. It was a super bitch hit I finally got the bolt with the stud sticking out removed. I threaded that hole so hopefully it’s good to go. Now the one on top is an issue. I drilled it out. I tried tapping the hole I had made but it is very wonky. That hole also doesn’t go all the way thought the block so putting a nut in the back side isn’t an option.

How would y’all go about attacking the wonky hole that is being a bitch to thread?
