Hello I have owned my 2006 BMW 325xi for about 6 months, about 2 months after owning it the SES light came on.
I ran the codes and it came back with 002A1A (AKA P0440), I did my research and first replaced the gas cap. The code was intermittent at this point. Then about a month later it was coming back more frequently, sometimes it would just store the code and sometimes the SES would come on too. So I then replaced the purge valve solenoid, then bench tested the one that was in there and it operated fine. But as of recent, I can clear the code, shut the car off and start it and the code is there within minutes. I have checked most of the lines in this system other that the long one that runs under the car. I don't smell gas, I don't feel pressure built when I loosen the gas cap, the car runs fine but idle stutters on start up and then levels out within seconds. Sometimes if I let the code sit long enough it will be accompanied by with code 002a2e for mixture control. The code is always thrown at idle, if I stop and park my car and leave it running or stop at a stop light long enough it will trigger it. Also this maybe a fluke, but when I go out of my way to put Shell 93 in it (Opposed to generic 91) it seems to trigger faster and 9/10 trigger the SES. I am taking it in on Monday to BMW to have some recall work done (Heater blower wiring and PCV heater) and they are going to smoke test it for me too. There isn't enough info about this on google or this forum so I want to pick your brains about it. Have you guys experience this issue? If so what was your outcome? Being an evap issue I am not too concerned as it doesn't drive different and I don't have emission test in Michigan. But it is quite annoying to have a SES come on ALL THE TIME. Thanks in advance -Dillon ![]() Last edited by dcart92; 02-02-2021 at 08:51 PM.. |

UPDATE: I noticed that the SES light would come on after clearing when coming to a stop and the idle would come down but then the light would illuminate.
Which made me this that this was not a leak and that something wasn't opening to reintroduce the EVAP to the throttle body. So I pulled out the "Replacement Purge Valve " and put in the OEM one I had pulled prior. Then I used a new gas cap and tightened it with the strength of Thor. I have driven 60 miles and no code!!!!! So I think this boiled down to bunk replacement parts and not crank the gas cap tight enough. I know it seems silly but I always cranked the cap until it click and let it be, but for some reason I need to turn it until it clicks and then some more if possible. I will report back if the SES returns. |

I have never had issues going as far as the click with the cap. Maybe the seal in yours is going bad which is why you need to torque it to 200ft lbs lol
