Can new chain tensioner cause damage?

I have a very slight noise coming from the top of my N52 and I'm thinking it's the vanos or the chain. Can a new chain tensioner make things worse, someone said it can break the old plastic chain guides

Will be interested to see people's responses to this. Having done well over 100K, I was thinking of fitting a new tensioner as a preventive maintenance item...

Couldn't wait for people to respond so I fitted it anyway, went for an hour's drive, so far no problem. If anything it felt a lot smoother at first but as I was coming home it started to feel like it used to...still idles at 550 and it vibrating a lot

Nope. Only have one fault code, it's oil pressure swith plausability. I changed the sensor, the garage checked oil pressure, all seems fine, so I assume it's the wiring.

It's interesting you say that a new tensioner can break the guides.

I replaced mine a few thousand miles ago when I did MILVs and I now have a vanos issue. I'm wondering now if the guide broke and one or both of the cams jumped timing. I need to open up the motor I've just been lazy....

Did you get a chance to confirm whether the chain guide was actually broken? I'm sitting at 164K miles on my N51 and was thinking of replacing the chain tensioner because I'm getting a slight rattle when the car is cold when accelerating. The rattle disappears completely when the car is warmed up. No codes or drivability issues in my case.

If anyone else has experience replacing the timing chain tensioner I'd greatly appreciate any input good or bad.

Finally got around to fixing this. Chain guides were fine but my cams jumped timing. Reset and it runs fine now. Luckily no valve damage and compression is fine
