OK. Just reviving this thread.
I have just purchased an E90 320D and wish to do my own maintenance. After reading all the above it looks like I need an LL04 oil to suit a motor with DPF. Am I right in thinking Castrol Edge 0W40 to suit DPF equipped vehicles is a good choice? Also what filter brand is everyone using? Last edited by Pinarelloman; 09-21-2018 at 11:35 AM.. |

Some guys prefer to pay extra for liqui moly, its up to you. Other options are Nulon, Penrite also who both make a good product. Buy mann filters, theyre the OEM BMW filters and cheaper than the ryco filters from SCA/Repco etc yet far superior quality. I buy mann filters from sparesbox.com.au and AFAIK they currently have oil on sale also with free shipping. |

One more question on the oil.
The Supercheap auto site says 5W-30 for E90 with DPF but other research shows 0W-40. Which is better? I assume that coming into summer the %W-30 will be fine. |

Use 5W-40 that meet the specification LL-04 low SAP.
BMW does not recommend 0W oils (except the M47TU2) unless the ambient temperature is regularly below -20C. |

Further advice re oil additives.
I have a Landcruiser diesel and have nearly always added a Moreys MOREY’S HEAVY DUTY OIL STABILIZER additive to it. I was wondering whether Moreys oil additive will be suitable for the N47T motor? The reason I ask is the oil additive will change the viscosity of the oil and that may also possible affect the DPF. Any thoughts? |

I have been using motul 8100 x clean from sparesbox but wouldnt mind if castrol edge is suitable. |

I have a n55 335i and have found that my car burns less oil between changes when using motul xcess 8100 5w-40 compared to Castrol edge titanium 5w-30
Not sure if it’s the 30 related or oil itself but I’ll be sticking to either motul or liquimoly |

Wow, i've read this thread at least six times just trying to find a good suitable oil for my E92 325i . Heated subject lol I'm about to change over from OEM dealer recommended to Motul 8100 X-Max 0W-40. Have seen many of you in search of boutique oils, hard to find on common auto store shelves here in Melbourne. I have come across a supplier called Autosphere who stocks many of these oils mentioned in this thread. Dealt with Michael the Director who not only offers exceptional customer service but is a really cool Oil Geek. Hope i'm posting this in the right place, I'm a newbie to the forum and BMW.

You're necro posting, meaning this thread is pretty old, but still a relevant topic. Just always make sure to first, or some people will get on your case.
As mentioned, you are safe with any LL-01 rated oil. I believe EU uses LL-04 as their fuels have lower sulfur content and their oils are designed as such. I typically run liquimoly but I am trying amsoil 5w-40 for the first time.
