Engine malfunction with no codes

Hello guys, recently I have been getting a engine malfunction light only when doing 30+ min drives. There are no codes associated with it and it goes away if I turn the car off and on. Car pulls WOT great without throwing codes or anything like that, and other than this issue is perfect. But being that there are no codes I'm a little lost, any ideas ?

Read codes, when you get the engine malfunction light, without turning the car off. Use INPA or Protool etc

Which light are you referring to exactly?

Not CEL, the one that pops up on the idrive, like I said, there are no codes just the light and the obvious limp mode. Unless turning the car off and back on clears the codes then there are none.

There are codes. Use a better scanner.

Exactly Which message pops up on the idrive?

What are you using to read codes?

Did you scan for codes, whilst the idrive was showing the error?

I use MHD to scan, I did not scan while driving but I don't see why the codes would disappear just because the message is gone. It says engine malfunction on the I drive, it's limp mode.

Okay sorry there is codes they just weren't making the CEL come on, I get exhaust vanos and misfire on cylinder 1&4. I just swapped the vanos solonoids as well and the vanos code didn't move.

Ordered new vanos solonoids as I think mine are original with 100k+ miles. Will update if that helps but as far as the misfires go I switched the coils and will update on that next time I drive but they are very new and so are the spark plugs.

Yes, waiting to see if they come back. But I have cleared them before to no avail.

If swapping the coils and plugs from different cylinder doesn't resolve the issue, then next thing to check is the injectors.

I'm assuming you had no fuel smell or oil on the plugs?

Haven't checked yet, but I'm leaning towards that being an issue. The startup is a little rough but there is no long crank which is the only thing leaving me wondering. Also car runs great once it is warmed up other than the random limp mode.

Good idea to check the plugs mate, any fuel smell could indicate Injectors leaking, Oil on plugs likely Valve Cover Gasket leaking.
