Then two days later my shiny new intercooler (which is why the undertray was off the in the first place) fell out of my car and I ran it over. Had the undertray been there I could have probably rescued it when it broke loose from the charge pipe - it would have been resting on the undertray instead of on the pavement.

Bottom line is, I left mine off for ease of access in the case I developed some boost leaks from any of my newly installed piping because I was too lazy to do the 10 minutes of work it would have taken to put the screws back in, also I didn't want to get another sweatshirt dirty.

Verdict: GET A NEW ONE

Unfortunately, there have been 1,273 blown engines that reportedly had the undertray installed at the time of failure. Coincidence? I. THINK. NOT.

Go ahead and run your undertray if you don't care about your engine's health but you want it to look pretty.

Sorry Greg, I have derailed, and continue to derail, your thread.
hehe the thread is about someone who has difficulties to install his intercooler so i guess if something is screwed in the install, it's better that the intercooler fall on the undertray as a support than on the pavement, just my pov

My .2 cents is, my car doesn't have one. Didn't when I bought it, though the underneath of the front bumper was torn up as well (looks exactly like someone parked over a curb stop and backed up, not a huge deal). I however would like to have them, mostly just for the salt (though it's usually not a crazy amount) that goes on the roads here in the winter.

I've just decided I will get them when I get my front M Sport, that way I don't have to worry about finding some way to attach them to the nonexistent mounting holes on my current front bumper.

lol undertray supporting a FMIC,

FMIC Weighs about ~10kg, the Undertray is plastic cover, no way will it hold a FMIC

You even reading about the benefits of the FMIC at all? 🤦

Don't spend it all in one place!

No worries man, I got a good laugh. And now I feel all warm & fuzzy that my FMIC will not fall off.

But now I am concerned neither of my Japanese daily drivers have an undertray installed, and should I be driving them now...

What is the connection between the benefits of the FMIC and the undertray question ?

Concerning the weight, yes i think it can hold the FMIC with no problem, the understay has a lot of screw (like a LOT), i am pretty sure it will maintain the FMIC if it fails, maybe not forever, but enough time to notice that something went wrong

I just related a story that happened to someone here, but at the end of the day, anyone does what he wants, keeping the undertray or not, i just chose to keep it

I will insert a small narrow block of wood between the undertray and the bottom of the FMIC to keep it secure, in the event the FMIC somehow comes unbolted. I will also put a rubber band around the FMIC and the radiator housing for added assurance. I have some extra bungie cords I don't know what to do with either...oh, and duct tape too.

You kidding but there are often failed (crossed thread or something) intercooler bolts, when i got my VRSF, it came with two new bigger bolts

It's a piece of plastic, it's not designed to hold the FMIC, Facepalm. Hoping the undertray holds your FMIC if it drops isn't one of the benefits listed.

Anyway enough derailing the thread.

No kidding?

Of course it's not designed for that, but i am pretty sure the FMIC will not fall on the pavement with the undertray on (it's not like it's falling from the second floor of a building )

Anyway OP was asking if he could test drive without the undertray and i wouldn't as a safety measure, especially if i am not sure 100% of the install and got some trouble to clip hoses.
(even if i must admit the story i quoted here is marginal)

Cleaned and reinstalled the undertray Saturday. Got it right the first time and no bolts leftover, success!
