I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with my m57 335d. Long story short my vacuum pump locked up when I tried to start it after I installed it incorrectly and it broke the hub that engages the exhaust cam gear. It broke clean in half and I got both pieces out and installed a new vacuum pump. The car also never started when it first broke, only turned over with the starter. With the new pump on the engine is very loud and is ticking and when I tried to test drive it once I hit boost it started miss firing like crazy and smoking. I turned around and the smoke smelled like oil smoke. I have a lot of pictures and videos but I'm not sure what my help someone help me, but I can post anything I can. I also have protool.

Would be useful to hear the noises at idle - loudness/ticking. My guess is that the timing gear is in bad shape, and has jumped a tooth too. I think you're going to need to take the covers off and inspect it thoroughly.

Here is a link to the video. It is much louder in person and it did not sound like this prior. https://youtube.com/shorts/jYEavX2fFWs?feature=share

From what I can hear there I'd say the timing gear has jumped a tooth. I think there may be a way to confirm this by looking at some data, but I'm not sure how... I think it's detailed on this forum somewhere.

Maybe someone else can chime in.

Here is the timing data that I was able to get at idle. This was still during the cold start period so I'm not sure if that will effect it at all. And do you know if these engines can skip a tooth or two and not interfere? That is my main concern right now.

I'm not sure about interference. I think you might be ok, but I actually don't know.

I just went to my car (M57 330d) to read its values for comparison, but couldn't find them. I tried Vehicle > control modules > DDE > live data > raw. But couldn't find anything relating to cam or crank in there? Is there something fundamentally different about the 330d Vs the 335 that I'm not aware of?

Not that I know of. I just used the search bar at the top of protool and searched cam and came up with the 2 camshaft values.

Did you navigate to the DDE live data section first, or just search from the main screen? I also used search, but got no results from within the DDE section.

It sounds like it may be because it's a 330d then. But after reading through that entire post I'm pretty certain that my timing is way off. Most of those guys had timing between 0 and 1 and mine is at -6. So looks like now I will need to figure out where to get the timing tools and chain components.

I took a look at my cam gear pictures and it looks to be a 60 tooth sprocket, this would mean 1 tooth is approx. 6 degrees of rotation. Seeing how that correlates directly with your readings, I'd say your chain must have skipped a tooth but I'm not an expert with engine timing.

Good luck sir.
