330d M57 Turbo Removal

Hello all, first post here.

I'm looking for some help in ways to remove the turbo on my M57 330d. The turbo is whining and needs to be replaced.

Being in the UK, the turbo is intimate with the steering column so I'm not sure if removing the turbo from the bottom is going to be an option/any easier.

From what I've seen online, it looks like an huge amount of stuff has to come off the engine for the turbo to come out the top.

Does anyone have a step-by-step guide?

I did try searching but nothing quite fitted the bill.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Regards

Stuart

You might give the face book group a try, North American BMW Diesel Owners Group. Maybe one of the members has done the fix

Concerning the referral to FB group given earlier, most of us have the bi-turbo version of M57 and more importantly our steering column is on opposite side of engine bay. He needs help with right hand drive owners. There is another FB group that has many of those guys. I’ll find it and post link below.

Here are the preliminary tasks, as specified by BMW...

Remove acoustic cover
Remove diesel particulate filter
Remove right pressure pipe
Remove intake port for intake noise damping
Disconnect clean air pipe between air-mass sensor and turbocharger

Hope that helps a little. I can probably pdf all the necessary instructions for you some other time.

Curious about the noise that means your turbo needs to be replaced... Can you be specific or record it, please? How many miles has it done?

Sounds like you can leave the steering alone which is a plus!
