People in GTA help!
I might move to Toronto from Vancouver to go to school there starting from this fall semester. I homestayed in Toronto for a year a couple years back but I didn't get a chance to familiarize myself around town. This time, I'm planning on getting into a condo or an apartment suite. I was wondering if anyone can suggest me a good residence area to live in, preferrably not so expansive(say like 1k~1.2k for 1 bedroom suite) and not so far from U of T St. George campus? I lived in Noth York(Finch st.) area, and I had no problem living there. Any where that is like North York would be nice!
Thanks in advance! I really need some advice on this~ ![]()

Yonge and Finch has tons of condos now and its right by the subway, and most likely cheaper than downtown too...

I think Yonge and Finch/Sheppard is way too far away from U of T, escpecially since the TTC takes forever.
Since living close to home or in a certain neighbourhood isn't a concern, I would suggest something closer to the St. George campus. You can check out rental properties on mls.ca |

It's a one hour commute during rush hour (TTC). That isn't so bad.

I'm not a student, but i'm guessing the OP would rather get an extra 45 mins of sleep rather than commute in the mornings. |

Refujeet. Yes. You are "spoilt"
![]() In all seriousness though to the OP - I've been looking at condos too, and unless you want to live in an older building, the condos around Yonge/Finch, Yonge/Sheppard are no cheaper. For a new building you are looking at $1300 for about 550-600 sq ft. But do go onto www.mls.ca go to Toronto central and keep clicking the blue location area on the left until you drill into enough detail to see the streets. Myself, I've chosen to live in Etobicoke, just made an offer on a unit there for rental, we'll see if they bite. I work in North York. And the subway is not bad - from North York to the downtown campus its only about 40 minutes max. |

Thanks guys! So Yonge and Finch isn't such a bad place to live either even hearing from people living in GTA eh. I have an acquintance living there I just recently got in touch with over the phone. He says he's paying 1650 for 2 bedrooms in Sheppard area. Man I don't wanna spend any figure around that, for 1 bedroom just because condos are new. I guess I have some searchings to do online. Btw, I'm thinking of trasnferring into the commerce program at SG campus from my current school in BC(SFU).
Any more inputs on this matter will be appreciated guys! Thanks!!

Bear in mind that our Transit Union will go on strike once every few years. And they just has a work stoppage back in April which was coincided with University exams time...

I remember those stirkes. Bus system was little confusing too since there is viva, and the TTC. Subway was very convenient though

Given the budget of 1.0k to 1.2k, downtown would cost way more, plus if you plan to bring your car over, or get a car here, parking is most likely expensive within the downtown condos.

lol, this is too funny. I was actually going to do the opposite of what you're doing until I changed my mind. I was going to go to UBC for engineering, but now I decided I'll just go to Queens and skip the trouble of moving there and stuff.
But for finding a place here, i guess it just depends onwhat program you are going to study since UTSG has alot of campus' all over down town, Good luck

I know a few people, including my niece, once shared a condo at the Liberty at Bay & Gerrard. Not too bad of a builring and it should be within your budget. 5 minutes from Med Sci and 10 minutes from Engineering.
If you want just a rental you cn try 200 Elm Street. Another one of my niece lives there now. No indoor parking so you need to apply for a street permit if you own a car. 5 minutes from Engineering as well.

![]() btw, I heard a rumour that Queen's still has some racism going on within the area, and students often protest about it hoping to eliminiate the discriminations or something. It's probably because of its location(I once considered moving near Queen's to go to Queen's LOL..) I'm not sure how it is now ![]() anyways, ![]()

I used to rent at King and John St (near the CN tower) and I was paying about 1.6K which is a bit high for you, but it did include most bills (heating + electric). I then lived (owned) at the summit at 705 king west and I think units there rented out for around 1.4. If you are relying on TTC then I would try and live near a subway. The streetcars along king street were awful, i.e. very packed at peak times.
If you know anyone else going to the area I would have thought it would be way cheaper to rent a 2 bedroom condo and share. |
