Kind of a Big Deal

At a minimum I would tune out the EGR and SCR systems. Better yet, tune them out and toss the EGR in the trash and replace with an AARodriguez racepipe, which will free up a lot of space. These changes plus a couple of other routine items (principally harmonic balancer, engine mounts, and vacuum hoses) will head off CBU and mitigate probably 75 percent of your reliability problems.

2011 w 61000
Purchased in Apr 2015 with 23,900 miles All below replaced by me TPMS module Glow plug module MAF EGR cooler Thermostat (because I was already in the area) Red boost charge pipe Car is currently at BMW to diagnose a strange noise from engine area for which I couldn't figure out. Under warranty NOx sensor (original owner) Recalls HVAC blower motor SCR/UREA Battery cable I was expecting it to have issues but not all of these. Luckily I was able to do a lot of the work myself. If I could do it again I likely would not buy this car. Car has a Renntech tune but all issues except boost pipe occurred before tune. |

However, I just got it back from the dealer. They think I may have something going on in the crankcase. Either a rod or main bearing but they didn't open up to confirm. |

I've been seeing more and more people comment about potential bearing issues. Wonder if its a coincidence or a pattern...

BMW upped the warranty to 100,000 miles on the Turbo, NOx, injectors (pretty sure), catalytic converter and I think the inter-cooler.
Must do's: Never (try not to) push the Turbo's until you have driven the car for about 7 or 8 miles and either do a JBD or remap.... Dont go over 350 Hp and 500 lbs of torque with out doing brakes and rear differential. Last thing if you can....just a suggestion. Try to get a M Sport, doesn't have a heated steering wheel but there are only about 650 left on the road in America. Last edited by DougNBodie; 12-12-2018 at 06:52 PM.. |

2010 335d w/ 137k miles
(purchased from my cousin back in 2019 with 126k miles) What a pure bliss to drive, best car I've ever owned, so much fun that I don't entirely begrudge spending the money on maintenance because I know how much fun I'll get from it on the other side. Replaced the front struts (~$700), but my cousin told me that going into it. It already had a NOx sensor code when I got it from my cousin but I wiped it and did a drive cycle and still passed smog in CA. Over the two years I've owned it the NOx sensor codes worsened. Quote from Indy shop for $1,600 or about $1,000 if I do it myself. At this point it's the right time to sell it because we're ditching the apartment and going to try the vanlife for a year or two and don't want to store the 335d. Besides that I've really only had to replace the front left wheel speed sensor which was easily done myself for like $40 for the part. I absolutely recommend the car, just also budget something reasonable for annual maintenance. |
