Finally figured out the problem after hours of research.

Part number 51167161083 is only for cars built up to 10/2009. For my 08/2011 build, I actually need part number 51169219140 which is very similar but has longer/different hooks so that it will work with my mirror.

Damn, thanks I didn't know that. I got the correct part number for my production year but somehow still had to shave down the cover to fit. I'll update the DIY with your info. Thanks.

The "pocket" inside the cover is approximately 6×6×6 cm³.

Where are you guys getting the Interior Mirror Trim Cover from?

My car is later than 2009, and for some reason the cover is 3 times the price of the earlier versions at $26.
