Just move it to a new spot in the carpet and screw it back in. The pad it contacts on the mat is large enough to still work. No big deal, unless you want to replace your whole carpet!

Oh never mind I won't drill another hole in the carpet , it just does this when I lift the carpet up
Pretty annoying and crappy design !

Slip your hand under the mat and support the button before pulling up the matt. This takes the load off the auger and won't rip out from the carpet then.

I had this issue big time with my Volvo V70 - the area that the mat retainer went to was completely destroyed to the point that there was no repositioning it. So I cut out a square of carpet and underlayment about 2"x2" and screwed and glued a block of wood cut to size and the same thickness as the pad and carpet, then screwed the retainer to that. Volvo uses a peg and hole system rather than velcro, but it would work just as well in a BMW. Solved the issue completely, and that mat does NOT move unless you really, really want it to.
Obviously, be darned careful about where you put the screw to hold the piece of wood in, or just use glue. I used construction adhesive and a single stainless steel screw - that piece of wood would need to be chiseled out of the car.
