2009 335xi loud ticking. Bad injector?
Developed a loud ticking recently. Thought it was a vacuum leak but not convinced. Could this be a bad injector? I replaced all the injectors in 2018 with index 12. The car is not throwing any codes at all and has 60k miles (100k kms). Idle has become a bit rough as well at start up with the odd "shudder" at idle when warmed up. Any thoughts/insight would be appreciated. |

What happens with the sound as RPM's increase? Definitely not the sound I'd want to be hearing. Sounds a bit more serious than anything fuel system related.
Assuming you bought new OE index 12 injecors that's a very very low probability that any are bad. Just sounds too noisy for HPFP. I would definitely be concerned about a bad bearing. Pretty rare problem at low mileage, but it can and does happen. Usually due to poor oil quality, long oil change intervals, low oil, etc. |

I did unplug injector #1 (which I've always thought didn't install as smooth as the others when I did the injector swap in 2018), and the sound was pretty much gone. Just the standard tick that all N54's seem to produce via direct injection.
I do not think it is rod knock at all since the sound/rate didn't increase with any revs. Here is the updated vid with injector #1 unplugged, I realize that I am in limp mode and the car runs like garbage with the injector unplugged, but the sound is now gone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S8gZZfvgCw |

Injectors can tick/knock as well, just never heard it so loud. Just swap it like @saif2018 said, and see what happens.
Remember with the injector disconnected, there is no "work" being done in cylinder 1, so it's just being moved by the crankshaft... |

![]() Does the fuel purge vent valve stop ticking when the oil warms up? I've got a similar tick, goes away after a few minutes of driving, |

Thats a good question. I unplugged it for a second just to verify that it was in fact ticking, and it definitely was. It wasn't throwing any codes and was cheap enough so I figured I'd just replace it.
