Hi All,

Woke up on Friday and went out in the car to get a Tandoori Chicken jacket potato and i had to double look in my wing mirror because the road behind me was covered in smoke.. i thought surely that's not mine? So i stop at the traffic lights and smoke was coming out the bonnet!

So i drive home and i could see a puddle of oil from where my car was parked.. so i took this video to have a look underneath and see where it was coming out exactly.

Turbo Failure

So i phoned the AA and after four ETA's being extended i finally had someone pop ober and within 2 minutes he closed the ticket and said this is nothing that can be done at the roadside, you can choose what garage it goes. So i phoned to double check with the AA that i could in fact choose any garage and they confirmed i could as long as they're VAT registered.

I knew straight away that I'd send it to Best Turbos in Oldbury, they're a fantastic company specialising in BMW turbo's (and do other makes of course). The staff are really nice and go out their way to help (i know this because i had my Audi Q7 done before). And you also get free diagnosing and 2 years warranty on labour and parts

After Best Turbos confirming the diagnoses with the AA as well as me sending some details, my claim was approved and £500 was put towards the repairs! Well worth the £19 i've been paying a month!

Turbos been reconditioned, turbo pipe, oil and oil filter replaced and its now running great! Here's a picture:



I'll try to do a video soon.. you can hear the turbo wind up nicely

Maybe it did mate, all i know is its a damm good potato and was worth a try!

I like your thinking.. i'll leave the time i set off for my potato a mystery. I quite enjoy reading this thread, its like.. forget the blown turbo, what about the potato?

Hello,

Just stumbled across this thread as I research what is required to change the turbo on my car (2007 E90 M57 330d)

Did you change the turbo yourself? Are you able to detail what needs to be removed from the engine to access the turbo?

I asking because I want to source all the relevant seals and gaskets ahead.

Hi Stuart,

I had AA parts and Garage cover so I took the car to Best Turbos in Oldbury and the AA put £535 towards that £700 or so bill for a new turbo and service so unfortunately I can't walk you through the steps.

First and foremost use the website realoem for part numbers

Second you could do with installing either ISTA+ or BMWTIS which will give you instructions of how to remove, install every part of the car along with torque ratings and whether the bolts need replacing.
