325i E93 Vibration at 60-67mph

Hi All,

So I am at my wits end trying to chase a vibration-y/judder that can be felt throughout the car chassis. For record the car is 325I E93 vert.

I'd like to point out that it is not felt through the steering wheel or brake related and it continues even when the car is in neutral (its an auto).

It only happens between 60-67mph precisely and drives perfectly smooth thereafter or before those speeds.

As a process of elimination, I have done the following:
  • Replaced both wheels and tyres (no joy). Double checked wheel balancing
  • Overhaled propshaft coupling and centre bearing (was in good condition before changing).
  • Driveshaft and diff looks to be fine but there was slightly play on one driveshaft so replaced the pair too with new ones

Other things I did was clean the vanos solenoids, check coils and spark plugs (all recent). Injectors are all index 11.

The bushes look all fine with no out of the ordinary play but again this is not felt in steering or braking etc.

The only thing i've noticed is when the roof is down its not noticable, only when the roof is up. Is the roof known to have vibration / juddery sensation at those speeds?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Garage List
Engine mounts? Just a thought, as you've tried most of the obvious causes...

In addition to Phil's suggestion I had a Supercharged Jag once that did the same sort of thing. Took me about 3 years to find the culprit!

.... Oh you want to know what it was? The gearbox mounting was shot (it had an integral damper) and at a certain speed would shake the whole car to pieces.

Engine and gearbox mounts would be the next thing.
Could also be a wheel bearing.

I know you said the wheels are balanced, but I'd still suggest checking they're actually round, with a dial gauge.

Is it the roof rattling? I've been in a few E93s that rattle at motorway speeds
