Almost every aftermarket filter I've seen is washable. If it's a quality filter a little hot water and Dawn dish soap won't hurt it. It's just like my old dirt bikes and we washed them numerous times during dusty summer months.
I use the K&N air filter cleaning kit.

My vote is buy a spare. It takes a while for filters to dry out after correctly washing them and then re oiling. This way you can swap whenever you want and then have a clean on on the shelf.

Also, remember to finish washing them them from the inside out. What I mean is have the hose etc. push water from the inside out. That way you are pushing debris out of the filter and not into it.

Filters also often look dirty but are performing fine. Hold one up to a light and look from the inside out. It tells you how really dirty the filter is.
