The early LCi 325d (M57) used a different engine to the later 325d (N57). The earlier engine using different injectors and was effectively the previous e46 330d engine. The LCi 330d was always the N57 engine right from the start. When they introduced the N57 engine to the 325d they then mapped it down to the lower bhp and retained the lower insurance group.

This said, when I researched buying a 330d vs the 325d, there was just £50 difference in annual premium and I found it very difficult to get a well spec'd 325d at the time. So the 330d won.

Apologies to the OP for the off topic discussion. Also for the use of the word 'buy' in the 2nd post - wishing I'd aimed the post more towards 'starting point' and reduced the amount of animosity caused.

But you need to check which engine you're getting as it may be better to go for a 330d if the 325d is older.

Pre 2010 the injectors are different on the 325 so you cannot tune it as much. 2010 onwards for e90 and 2011 for e92 the engine is identical, gearbox and all its purely down to mapping. So if its before these dates a 330 is a good idea as it can achieve just over 300 safely from a dms map. To comment on a post you should also have the knowledge to back it up
