Hey everyone, I'll keep this short and sweet. I am having a whining noise when I apply throttle and starting at ~1100 RPM. I suspect it's the HPFP failing since I am having long cranks as well and low pressure codes.

The only thing throwing me of is that I get good Rail pressure (>2500 psi) under load so I am wondering if its really the HPFP or if its another component.

Would injectors do such a whining noise? I never heard of such occurence but if someone knows just let me know.

Longs cranks and shadow codes are exactly the symptoms I had, replacing the HPFP solved them both. I also had fuel pressure drops though on WOT pulls so my pump might have been in worse shape then yours. HPFP are wear items in my opinion, if you are on the original one it's like time to replace.

Highly recommend buying from FCP and using the lifetime warranty to replace whenever you want in future. The pricing is so ridiculously price gouged unfortunately.

Yeah I was ready to order it on FCP euro but man the rail pressure is so good especially at startup and i have no damn clue what that whine is and wasn't able to reproduce it, so i want to see if I can get a more solid answer before ordering a 1k part but i do agree and tend to go towards HPFP.

N55 sub-forum is dead so you might be waiting a while!

Look into the fuel pressure regulator as well. That has been the cause for long cranks for some people.

Thanks for bringing it up. Do you know of anyways to test it or troubleshoot it? Is it possible through ISTA or INPA?

I am still very confused by the whining noise. It doesn't seem to ramp up with RPM and I checked the PCV valve for any vacuum and it seems it's good.

The whine doesn't change with rpm? Maybe it's your LPFP or your water pump making the noise? If it was your HPFP, I'd expect it to change with engine rpm.

No that's the weird part, it is coming from the driver side of the car for sure. Like I would almost say its coming from the alternator/intake manifold area. I thought maybe it was the pulley attached to the alternator but since there's no variation in tone with RPM I dropped that idea. In fact all of the chain-driven or belt driver pumps I am now doubting.

Could it be a crankshaft seal? It seems maybe to be more of a pressure leak noise due to the fact it doesn't change with RPM.

Can you hear it if you remove your oil cap

That's the next thing I'm trying. Had to turn off the car to go to my meeting and it only does the noise once engine gets hot so I was thinking it might be related.

Once I open the oil cap nothing changes. There is no sound when opening the oil cap and leaving it idle. When applying throttle again at 1100 RPM the sound is exactly the same. Not quite sure if its a tiny bit louder but essentially nothing changes.

I don't think there is any definite / clear indication of it failing which is the tricky part. People have reported long cranks even after changing the HPFP and even timing corrections under load. After replacing the regulator, timing corrections and long cranks disappeared.

Please forgive the ignorant question, but which regulator? The HPFP has a regulator incorporated into it, correct? I haven't tried tracking down where the low pressure regulator is located in these cars? My last car it was up on the fuel rail, but that car wasn't DI.

The fuel regulator I am talking about is in the gas tank. I believe the lpfp is on the passenger side and the fuel pressure regulator is on the driver side.

Still at lost with what the hell is happening here, might just be PCV that's not broken enough yet.

About that pressure regulator at the back of the car, once the weather gets better I might try to check it. I've been having a code for over a year about my DMTL system having a line disconnection even though I double-checked to make sure every line was well connected and even changed the DMTL motor. I guess I will ask because I have nothing to lose but do you think it could have a link with whatever is going on with the pressure regulator or my fueling system? I super highly doubt it since its evap related so shouldn't even have to do with any of it.
