Just to be clear, for a stock motor there's no question i'd prefer an S55. All day. I had thought this was specifically in the context of maximum performance and potential.
Yeah, I could see there being a lot of flexibility in the future. Just wish they'd used better parts.

HP wise maybe 3 peak hp, up to 8 motor hp at redline. It's also lighter weight. The real advantage is in the control and dynamic flow potential etc. Technically it could have also been easier to replace, except bmw decided nah.

My hpfp, water pump and injectors are all 9 years/80k miles old having been flogged with tunes and e85 since 20k miles 7 years ago. So it's all variable. I don't think the N54 is the best thing ever but the tech it has makes the engineer inside me tingly, moreso than most motors out there.

to steer this back on topic I think Terry was saying it was a hardwritten software cap rather than a physical limitation. Anyone flashing these yet?

Revisit to this thread six years later.

2007 335i coupe, E92 N54. Replaced water pump at 145,000 miles, spark plugs at 125,000 miles and they looked perfect, both turbos replaced under warranty at 82,492 miles. Nothing else but tires and oil. Motor still runs very strong and smooth.
