Thumbs up E92 HIGH Engine Temperature situation 2E81

2008 335i
65000km or 35 000 miles
OBD2 scaner bluedriver

yellow "engine temperature" light / display came on,
then the yellow "engine temperature" light turned RED! Followed by limp mode
Oil Temperature gauge was showing 85c
Turned off the engine and restarted the car to finish the remaining 30 seconds drive home. This was after a 17 hour shift at work. So I just got drunk and slept 14 hours.
Today I scanned for error codes and got
Error codes 2E81 and 2E82 in the history.

Topped up the coolant about 100mil and did a water pump bleeding procedure and the pump worked but it didn't finsh the procedure after 30min so i turned it off.

Started the car and while the heater is on the fan would go to maximum speed and off continuously. With no heat the fan didn't turn on untill on the obd2 scanner the coolant temperature went up to 90c the fan went in to max speed and I turned off the engine. The whole time the car temperature gauge stayed at 70c. So I did the bleeding procedure again and again didn't stop after 12 min like it should.
Went for a drive around the house and the oil temperature gauge on dashboard started working but it was lagging 10c compared to the obd2 scanner life stats. After 5min drive temperature on the scanner was showing 90c and 80c oil temp on the dashboard, turned on the heater and coolant temperature dropped to 80c on the scanner.
Turned off the car and the pump stayed on a min to cool down the turbos.

Recent work related was coolant and oil cooler gaskets.

If the water pump bleeding procedure worked the pump is still working and circulating the coolant?
Can I drive my self to the shop with out the tow truck ?

When you say dashboard, are you referring to the temperature below the tach? That is oil temp.

In any case, it's a guess whether you'd be able to limp it to a repair location or not. The pump speed is not what is being commanded by the DME and then shutting down as a result. Rather than reading the coolant temperature, it might be more informative to see the pump speed. That will give you an idea of it is functioning properly or not at all at the higher speeds with the thermostat open.

Unfortunately I have no way to test that or don't know how. . Engine oil temperature should be higher than coolant?

I wasn't sure what you were using for a code reader—many of them allow you to read various live parameters.

As far as the oil temp vs the coolant temp, the oil temp is normally higher at operating temperature.

Can you see water moving in the expansion tanks with the lid off?
IF so then you're OK to drive.
But if the car overheats again then pull over and shut down engine immediately.
I would monitor the coolant temp via combi display while driving and shut off engine at 100c and above. Before alarm set that is.

Ended up driving the car to the shop without any problems. They couldn't replicate the problem but I got them to changed the pump anyways.
