Question for Dinan Stage II/III folks who drive mostly in D (not DS)

I drive most of the time in D. I don't really like the abrupt gear changes in DS. If I want a quick burst I just paddle down while in D.

My question is for you guys who have the Dinan ECU upgrade, is the power difference still very noticable regardless of what tranny mode you're in? I'm kind of assuming most Dinan purchases are the kind of drivers who would leave in in DS more often than not but I could be wrong.

How is the power when cruising in 6th in D on the freeway and you punch it. I'm guessing with the extra power, it would kick down quicker?

Also, is there any change to the character of the gear changes in D and DS with the flash?

Thanks guys.

dont punch it its faster with like 3/4 throttle or so if you are on a roll. otherwise it will kick down and rev past the "meat" or peak whp many times.

Craig, you bought identical car and even parked near where I parked on ED!

Funny. Wow, just went through your pictures of the ED and cant help but notice you parked on 23 at harms? I think I recall parking at 20. I left the car there then came back latter to pick it up again to take it to dealer at Nealadassen (forgot spelling. -main VIP dealership in Germany) anyhow I remember because I did not lock the car...lol had crazy electronic issues including the car shutting down and refusing to restart just 7 km from Munich delivery center. Dealership took care of it and said it was software related. They said I had a "Monday car" I didn't think it was funny. Anyhow on redelivery issues continued for an agonizing 5 months until BMW was going to buy the car back. Then they said they'd replace all electrical components in the car for on last ditch attempt to fix it. Never had issues since. They were never able to figure out what was wrong. My ED was very much like yours with all same locations except I also went to Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein and it lasted 3500 miles and 3 weeks. I am just nostalgic.

Back On Topic. To answer your question, the car feels totally different. Vastly more powerful than before, smoother except a bit rougher at idle, and the gear way more powerful but character remains similar. BTW its a lot faster too. I use mostly D mode too unless I am in a place I can really drive spirited, then I flip to DS and on occasion full manual mode. What you waiting for anyway? You will only wonder why you waited so long, its really worth it. No regrets here. Believe it or not, I feel a earning for more even though I know it would be completely pointless. Your car is just better in all respects. Dinan had remapped the tranny with the last flash and I for one hated it. With the update, the returned it back to stock. I even emailed them saying I wished they had not messed with the Original. Thankfully they saw the light and returned it back to stock. Just a hode more power and torque, and they left everything else alone. Just the way BMW should have had the car from the factory first time out.

I get nostalgic about it too sometimes. Had a great time. That photo at Harms was the last time I saw my ED car (did you read my "stolen car" thread too? ). My dealership took good care of me after they accepted the responsibility. I'm already at 15k miles now since October

We'll I'm obviously considering the flash heavily by posting here. I figure if I'm gonna do it I should do it now as the warranty coverage Dinan offers means less and less every mile you drive. The last 4 months or so I did a LOT of driving for work and am getting back enough in my mileage reimbursement to cover the flash. I don't wan't to screw with the warranty so I'm leary of going to another tune, but that means I'd have to wait 50k miles to get a chip. I don't see me being that patient. After all, the ability to tune the engine was a big part of my choice in purchase. Just mulling it over still. I'll probably keep poking around here and ultimately get it within the next couple weeks. I change my mind a lot though There is an authorized Dinan reseller literally about a par 5 away from my house

Thumbs down Just read your stolen car saga! Wow, makes me feel lucky!

Man I was searching so hard for it before I realized its right in your signature. But Wow, that was some story. I didn't realize there is this much theft. I mean I saw a ton of threads with everything from 335 sans wheels to a Brand new M3 sans wheels seating on cider blocks at a Walgreens. Last year this happened to my E46 330....

What you cant see is all the wire looms they pulled out of the engine bay. Total damage $6K and 3 weeks in the shop. glad I had comprehensive insurance. Now after seeing all those wheel-less bimmers, I am going to buy wheel locks ASAP for both vehicles I own. I can't take the inconvenience and aggravation of this shit. I tell you I thought it was isolated incident till I took it to the dealer and they said they had everything in stock because it was a common occurrence. Man, I got car jacked 4yrs ago at the Hilton in Seacaucus NJ (right across from NYC) and I was so lucky the cops were already in hot pursuit of the thugs who apparently were in an Acura RL that they had just car jacked from someone else. Cops were there in 3 minutes tops. I threw the key and ran, but the thieves still managed to break the lock and try to start the car. Ofcourse it didn't work. They were lightning quick man, I was just amazed. Imagine my shock when I realized it was all caught on CCTV (Camera right behind us in the lot), and Hilton refused to hand over the tape to the cops and progressed to deny anything happened on their lot. I canceled my reservation in disgust and promised to publicize it, but never followed through. Cops said it was a lost cause and hotel would never hand over the tape without a court order because they didn't want that publicity. They said just call the insurance and move on. Its amazing what happens then you realize how vulnerable you really are. Now I am vigilant with my surroundings and make sure I park in well lit areas, but this crap still happened after that incident despite me being careful. Anyway I feel your pain. Hope you enjoy the new ride. Shit like that made me LoJack early warning my car. We all need reminders every now and then. A little investment can save you huge headache later especially since you can't guarantee it wont happen again.

This used to be my beater, but I sold it after I got the 08 RAV 4 V6 Sport. Honestly I prefer the RAV to the 330. Just me. The RAV is just as fast if not faster, but it feels like a pig compared to my Dinan Stage II 335i. Funny I can't help getting in that car and doing unnecessary 3hr trips every time I got time on my hands. I use the RAv as the beater, but take the 335 on any long trips if I don't need top carry stuff that wont fit in it. The car is addicting, and I am always afraid I will get pulled over because my heavy foot can't help laying into it.
