Oil cooler as a retrofit trans cooler
I'm considering adding and after market oil cooler to my N54. As far as I know my existing oil cooler is in decent shape, so I'm thinking that I want to repurpose it as a transmission cooler. I can run a solvent cleaner through it and then blow it all out with a bunch of air. Then run a at or so of ATF through it to make sure it's clean.
I believe the trans cooler fitting is just a flair/barb so I can cut off the oil fittings and flair them. The only issue I can think of it pressure difference. Can anyone comment on this? Or any other concerns I'm missing? |

This is interesting. I'm looking for a trans cooler rn and only thing holding me back is all the varying ranges of prices. If people are putting rando heatsinks in for coolers I feel like I'll be fine using anything. Might even do what OP is doing lol.

What about the T-stat that ensures the proper heat range of the trans oil? If you just hook up "oil cooler" I am certain that during the cold days the operational range of oil would be too low (esp. during high speeds/low load), so wear, impact on mpg?

Yes, I run 165 degree thermostat and have eliminated the auto heat exchanger.

You can just cut the existing lines and and barbed fittings with hose clamps. 2 clamps on each side of you want to play it safe.
I would also run a thermostat between the stock lines and the new cooler to ensure your reach operating temp before any additional cooling is required. |
