Best N52 replacement coils
Hi All,
My 2011 328i Wagon (E91) just blew its first coil after 105,500 miles (cyl #5). While BMW Direct Service had me back up and running after a couple hours, I'm already planning to have all coils and plugs changed at my next oil change. Question is, if my car came with the Bosch V 7594937 80-01 (9 221 504 470), what's the best replacement option? I'm looking for 100K+ miles of reliability over saving a few bucks. That said, improved awesomeness wouldn't hurt. Many thanks. R |

That's what you should use. The earlier model years came with different coils which have been superseded by yours, but 0 221 504 470 is the latest one for your car. It's also known as Bosch 00044. That's likely what they put in to replace your broken one. You might want to double check that that's what's in there, and then just go ahead and get 5 more of the same.

One reason why it's worth buying coils from your BMW dealer, rather than aftermarket alternatives. Coils are constantly being updated, so you want to fit the most recent upgrade, which only your dealer will have...

That's not a bad price. The Bosch ones are about $25 online, but I'm not sure what shipping would be for you; that might make it about the same price.
BMW also uses a Delphi branded coil, but if you already have Bosch then you might as well stick with those, especially if one of them is brand new. As far as I know there aren't any aftermarket coils for the engine that perform as well as the OEM ones. |

I did the Bosch 00044 coils as replacement. Seating these coils properly can be tricky. I had misfires after install, kept adjusting and reseating and finally got them to work.

Does anyone know about AIP Electronics ignition coils? I'm debating whether to get Delphi or AIP. Delphi has a video saying their quality is superior, AIP does not. However, AIP is less expensive. Decisions, decisions.....

Update.
So by 111K miles, my car was running like dog $hit. No hard-core misfires, but lots of hesitation and rough running under moderate load at slow-medium engine speeds (no problem at full throttle or high engine speeds). I assumed I had an eccentric shaft sensor problem so made an appointment with my dealer. But because it's Summer in Europe, no appointments available, so I decided to do the easy stuff myself. I changed out the coils (latest Bosch) and plugs (Bosch double platinum, OEM). The job took 1/2 the time I allocated (35 minutes). Since I had some brake cleaner lying around, I also pulled out the vanos solenoids for the first time and gave them a soaking (they were very clean, so no drama; that said, seals were rock-hard and will likely need to be replaced soon). Car is now running like a dream. Starts up much faster and acceleration is once again smooth and predictable. Why didn't I do this sooner? |

Can you describe in more detail about these hesitations and rough running under moderate load? I have long suspected coils as a possible cause for what I have been experiencing which sounds remarkably similar. Mine tends to vary from being pleasant to drive to being an annoying experience. The hesitations I have are at low revs - with moderate load in say 3rd gear it can tend to stutter, and if you are moving off from a non-stationary yield and apply more throttle it feels like it is misfiring (no error codes) or being held back (seems like eccentric shaft sensor issue), and then the power starts to return in lumps. The throttle behaviour is also somewhat jerky at lower engine speeds when going from off throttle to back on throttle. I almost also think that this is causing a slight delay or hesitation in throttle reaction time which then affects gear change (manual car also).
Well, I have a spare set of good coils that come from my E46 which are apparently the same but have that tab on the plug that is located in a slightly different position - just cut them off and they will work (the E90 2005 N52 had a different coil than the 2006/04-> models which were then the same as the E46 M54, so apparently it's just the harness and plugs that go onto the coils that were different). I must give these a try then and see if there are any differences/improvements. |

My car idled OK. When cold, I would get shutters and hesitation when any load was applied (between 10-70% throttle). Solution was to back off the gas or give full throttle or bring RPMs up over 4000. Once warm, the problem was not as bad (shutters and hesitation between 2000-4000 RPM) during moderate load. I suspect that these engines are pretty picky about the ignition components. If I were you, I would buy 6 new, identical coils and spark plugs. I would not mix and match. You can get them cheap online -- just make sure you are getting the latest versions. The other thing that you could do is take the plug off your eccentric shaft sensor to see if there's any oil on the pins. I was pleasantly surprised to find that mine was dry as a bone. Also, pull your vanos solenoids and spray the crap out of them with brake cleaner. Last edited by roundle; 05-28-2016 at 02:24 AM.. |

FYI: Had my car at the dealer last week. They scanned and cleared codes. The car was throwing a lot of codes prior to my 5-27-2016 post (misfires, failed exhaust/02 sensor). However, nothing showed up after the plugs / coils / vanos solenoid douch job.

For what it's worth, the text claims they have a metal sleeve, but the illustration does not show this...

They have a 2 year or 24000 mile warranty so I guess that's not too bad for 135 bucks! |

I have original Bosch coils on my N52k.
The mileage is just over 100k miles. I'm thinking of replacing new coils. The small chance that I will sometimes install Supercharger, very small. So that's why I could go for slightly better coils than the N52 basic. But which brand? What would be the best brand and best coil of 2022 year? Bmw recommendation coil is Delphi 12138616153 (price for one coil 43USD and aftermarket Delphi coil 23USD) Eldor is hard to buy here in Europe. But I can also order it from the US and pay taxes and shipping. But the price is almost the same as buying here BMW OE 12138657273 Eldor coils. (52USD) Dinan has also introduced new "high-power" coils. I've done a little google. ERA and BERU coils look exactly the same desing as ELDOR. The price of BERU and ERA in Europe is just over 30USD Is a coil from the same manufacturer and is sold under many brands. Hard to say, but look exactly the same. ERA880200 https://cdn.autocontent.lv/media/cat...0200_wm_01.jpg BERU ZSE143 https://media.autodoc.de/360_photos/.../h-preview.jpg Difficult choice.
