Shock absorber mount broken - which part?
Hi all
thanks for the help with this. Believe that the mount or some part of it has broken for my rear driver side (rhd) e92 M sport (325d 197hp). The symptoms are a knocking sound over bumps, but the suspension is not overly spongy in all honesty. I took the rear lining out and the shock itself is not sticking too high up, but is definitely loose. It wasn't enough to push the rubber cover off, for example. But it is probably 1" above where it should be. I attach a picture of the issue. The shock was replaced 2 years ago (current mileage is 118,000 so not surprising) but the mounts seemingly weren't replaced. Am I correct in thinking that I just need part D in the also attached image? It looks to me that is the broken part, but having never assembled the entire thing, it's hard to image how this breaking would be causing the issues I have. thanks again, Last edited by wfaz; 04-27-2022 at 03:34 AM.. interesting. part D that you mention, should just be like a metal cup essentially if i remember correctly. Has it actually broken or is it just loose because the strut is loose? hard to tell from images.
Looking at the state of the strut mounts you have, i would get a whole new kit, so A,B,C and D in the diagram you show. Seems to me the main issue is that when the shocks were replaced, they were either not tightened properly and/or it worked itself loose over time. But generally, it's a good idea to replace all the mounts and mounting parts as they are pretty cheap, when doing the shocks. |

The metal cup (part D) is supposed to be up pressed against the top of the mount, held by the tension from the shock rod. The fact that it’s flopping around seems to imply that it’s rusted in the center. Definitely replace that, but if the rubber on the mounts (A & C) looks anything like your bump stop rubber, you should replace that too.
You could reuse the dust boot (B) if it’s not torn, but they’re $5 USD or so, might as well just replace it. |

there a centering sleeve and oe mount are foam which fall apart over time. you need A,C,D and bump stop and lower mount if they reused those also for both sides. might as well upgrade to monroe rubber mounts.
