Need Help, Engine Malfunction Reduced Power, N55, 2011 e93 335i
Hey guys,
I need some help, I've been searching the forums and I have been trying to see if any other N55 owners have run into this issue. The other day I was accelerating onto the free way when the Engine Malfunction Light came on, along with that came a iDrive Message saying something along the lines " Engine Malfunction Reduced Power, get serviced". I didn't hear any change in sound, didn't go into limp mode, and didn't really notice anything. It goes away if I turn the car off and let it sit, it will reappear after a bit of acceleration, seems pressure related. So I got my self an OBD and the Carly for BMW app. I ran the diagnostic test and it displayed I had some other faults and the two engine faults below: Motor Control: Engine / Motor Charge pressure control, plausibility: Pressure too low Code: 002C57 Tank ventilation valve: stuck open Code: 00315A Let me know if you guys have seen these and how I should proceed, whether I should DIY Fix or go to a mechanic in the area, or the dealer... See link for more detailed info on the fault codes and what I have found and compiled so far. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6...096WENLUWlHOFk Thanks! |

I haven't tried fixing anything yet, I was waiting to see if anyone has encountered these issues, and whether I should take it to the dealer or mechanic. Or try to fix/mess with it knowing what I know now. I mainly haven't done anything yet because according to the fault codes and some of there solutions there could be a number of different things that could have caused it and a number of things that could fix it. I also was thinking about clearing the codes and driving and see if they come back up after driving for a bit.

have you checked the gas tank cap? that can throw a CEL if not closed properly.
The other reffers to low boost I guess, start checking for leaks in the charge pipe? |

I'll check those out, I just filled up with gas and it was doing it before that so I don't think it's that, I'll look at the charge pipe, at first that's what i thought it was but didn't see anything coming from it. I'll check again though, do you have any ideas of what too look for? I didn't know if broken charge pipes were mostly a n54 issue also. thanks!!!

When I had a n55 (X1) I had a cracked CP under WOT at around 23k miles. Had 1/2 CEL but car ran like crap until dealer replaced CP under warranty. I didn't have a code reader at the time but if your CP is cracked I'm certain you would feel the car shaking.

Yea I definitely don't feel any shaking, seems more like there is a reduction in power or the turbo isn't kicking in, can't really tell that well, I have only had the car since January and have only put around 1500 miles on it. Thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll try to check out what I can with what I know. I don't think I feel comfortable taking anything apart though unless someone else has had the same issue and fixed it themselves. I'm going to try and do some of things listed in the attached but after that looks be taking it to the dealer. After checking that stuff out should I clear the codes and try to see if it goes away or should I leave them for the dealer to see, I have a record of them? thanks!!!

I had this issue come up a while ago. Check engine light that would come on at seemingly random times, but mostly when accelerating on to highways. Happened at ~47.5k miles, now at ~57k. Pulled codes and 2C57 came up for charge pressure too low. Took it to the dealership and they found that the issue was a kinked EPKS hose to the valve cover. It was an easy/cheap fix.

Good luck! The dealer just ended up replacing the hose in my case, but hopefully you can fix it if not at least temporarily until you can get a replacement.

Update.$815 dollars later...
So couldn't really figure out much more trying to do it myself took it to the dealer and attached was the solution. $815 to get the turbo back up and running not as bad as I thought. Pneumatic Pressure Converter needed to be replaced. Thanks guys!

Pressure Converter fixed the problem.
My 2011 335ix recently got the 'Engine malfunction! Reduced power' message from the 2C57 code while accelerating moderately quickly. The car still ran like normal; not in limp mode. Shutting off the car and restarting cleared the trouble but it would come back predictably every time I goosed the throttle beyond a certain point.
From reading this and other posts, I ordered the Pressure Converter which now has part number 11-74-7-649-407. Replacing the part stopped the Engine Malfunction light and message plus the car had a much more spirited response to goosing the throttle. The loss of this power probably happened quite some time before this and perhaps gradually so that I didn't notice it was gone. So glad to have it back! |

Thank you for the part number but I think that may not be the right one for it.
I checked the BMW website for the parts and it says that is not the right one.
I have the same car as you, same year, model, engine. Perhaps there are other difference? The correct part number is: Home 2011 BMW X5 Turbocharger & Components 11-74-7-626-351 Pressure Converter 117015 - BMW (11-74-7-626-351) Yet, thanks for the part number, I will surely get the part and take it to mechanic to do it for me. |
