MyBMW app keeping sold car?

I sold my F87 a year ago. Just picked up my G82 so I downloaded the MyBMW app again. To my surprise I still see my F87 in the app.

I would have expected BMW to delete my connection after a new owner added the car to their MyBMW account, no? Does anyone understand how the system works?

Oh yeah, that's a big-time security issue. Wonder if there's a way to unpair a car from iDrive or something.

The new owner might not know or care about how MyBMW works and may have never registered it. The moral to this is when you sell a car make sure you wipe it from you MyBMW and when you buy one, make sure you register it so (hopefully) the previous owner has no access to it.

It's up to the new owner to register with BMW or the app will continue to work on your phone as it does not know that the vehicle has changed hands. If you trade in your BMW back to a BMW dealership the dealer will immediately shut down your connection. When I sold my X3 privately it only took a few days before I was cut off as the new owner registered himself with BMW as the new owner.

Okay, as long as it's a deliberate choice on the new owner's part, then I feel more at ease about it (even if it's a choice by not knowing).

For a second there I thought this was a serious security gap.

Still, periodic re-verification might be a good idea for systems like this.
