E91 LCI 320D - Engine Maintenance - Oil Change
Hola,
I see alot of debate around the oil for these cars - so just posting this as my bit on the oil. Firstly I have a 2011 - E91 LCI 320D. Recommended oil is: Castrol Edge 5W30 Now this is just my experience this is not scientific or factual - just what I found, after purchasing the car in 2021 - I could hear the timinig chain making a rhythmic sound, so under the purchase warranty this was replaced (oil change included with BMW specified Oil) After around 2000 Miles, I put the car in for a service (stamp wanted) at a BMW Specialist this was due shortly and due to the timing chain being cautious this service would serve as a flush also, they used the recommended Castrol Oil per BMW Specification, the car was running smooth and quiet, shortly after (3000miles?) I noticed the engine was becoming noticeably louder and by louder I mean far more mechanical and Hollow sounding the oil levels were fine, the oil was lubricating there is no debating that but this sound was noticeable to me, and I wasn't such a big fan of it, this sound to me would suggest deteriorating oil even though I know this is a good oil, I just didn't like this experience. I clock 6000 miles since the service and this is old school miles for a service is due so I do some research, and I've also been watching an individual on youtube Sreten (M539 Restorations, very talented individual, very thorough and very knowledgeable) where I first discover LIQUI-MOLY Locally finding a Liqui-Moly supplier is fairly hard as some will know this is a German Brand - but I found World of Lubricant in Milton Keynes. Alex is a genuine guy, I really like him and he will really advise as much as physically possible. I made a purchase of: LiquiMoly Top Tech 4200 (Liqui Moly 8973) Liqui-Moly Engine Flush Liqui-Moly Ceratec. 9000 Miles Later - Still sounds as if just serviced. I have since done my second service with the above products - and I'm more than happy. TL;DR : I personally prefer Liqui Moly Oils to BMW Recommended Castrol. |

Noise oil makes doesn't have anything to do with quality. It is type of additives they use in oil. Mobil1 0W40 API SN version that was made until November 2015 was notoriously loud in engines. But it was one of the best oils available on the market, if not the best! The resistance of that oil to shearing was remarkable. The HTHS (what actually matters when it comes to protection) extracted from that oil base was remarkable. But it was loud. It was loud bcs. combination of boron levels with such base stock.
I worked on oil development, only time I would use Liqui Moly in my car is: 1. No other oil available 2. Someone pays me. |
