:( Small dent on body line

soo.. i was at the beach have a great time when shit happened.. my friend opened the car door next to mines and bam... right on my body line of the driver rear door... it made a small 3mm dent on the line that is now circular in that area.. i know dentless removals cant work on edges and body lines so i dont know what to do.. im probly gonna make him pay for it even though he's my friend. its gonna bug me every time i walk to my once flawless bmw. is there another way to fix this? we all have body lines on our e90/92's im sure this has happend to someone as well

I'd say give the dentless repair a shot. It's worth a try to avoid having to paint it. Dentless repair quality is as varied as paint shop quality. I have a guy here in Miami who does amazing work and if you find someone very good he might be able to massage the dent out back to how it was or at least reduce it to an acceptable level so you can avoid the crapshoot that is painting a body panel. Just my opinion.

Something similar happened to me recently--I was stopped at a red light and a taxi cab stopped next to me on the right side to let the passenger (a girl, in her early 20's, probably) out. Inexplicably, she tried to get out on the street (her left) side--it was kind of a windy morning, and the door flung open and slammed right into my car. It was very loud, almost immediately I knew what had happened and turned to look at her, and she had the most shocked look on her face. At the time I was late for work so I just gave her a nasty look and some choice gestures and drove off. When I got to my office I got out to see how bad it was, and discovered why she had looked so aghast. There was a fairly big dent (~1" diameter) right in the character line, maybe about 6" aft of the door, and it was completely covered in yellow paint. The line is just completely smushed in and it's very noticeable even from hundreds of feet away.

The paint came off and, at least to my untrained eye, it doesn't look like *my* car's paint was seriously damaged.

I was disappointed when I did some research afterwards and found out that PDR often doesn't work on creases, etc. I'm hoping that's not always the case, though....

*******, how did it turn out for you?

I had a similar dent on the crease line. Had several PDR shops have a look and all said they can't fix it 100%. Then I found an independent guy here in bay area that does fantastic work. He worked on the small dent for 4 hours! But it looks brand new again. He does amazing work. So my suggestion is find someone similar who takes the time to repair these types of dents. Good luck.

Cool -- about how much did it cost? 4 hours...sounds like it could have been pretty pricey!

If I recall correctly, he charges about 100/hr. Had to take out my window so he could get good access to the dent. It was quite expensive, but this was a much better alternative than getting a body shop to repair...

This is true. paintless dent removal should work. I have actually had it down to my 335 before. It was right on the body line and the guy took of the rear tire removed the firewall and popped out the dent without drilling any holes. It looked perfect!

paintless dent removal can do work on bodylines. At least they said they could do it for my car. I had a small round dent from a baseball on the bodyline of my trunk (to the left of the license plate), they just said it would cost more since it's on a bodyline. I'd give them a shot. I called dent wizards and a few self contractors. As long as there's no scratches or anything.

All encouraging news...I dropped off my car at the dealer today (they have PDR onsite). They'll get back to me tomorrow morning. Based on all my past dealings with them I'm mentally prepared for a ridiculous quote somewhere between $500-$1000. I don't really trust them unfortunately. We'll see....I'll let you guys know what they come up with. If it's as ridiculous as I anticipate it will be, I'll try to find a local PDR specialist. Don't know any at this point though.

For a small dent like that, it shouldn't be that much. I was also expecting to be quoted a crapload of money for my dent but the max the guy quoted me was $300 and my dent sounds a lot bigger than yours. But GL though with the fix, just remember going to the dealer always costs more. =D

Just got the call from the dealer, bad news--the body shop guy there said there was "no way" he was going to even attempt PDR on the body line dent. How incredibly lame. The SA said that conventional body shop work to fix something like that would run about $1.5k. Wow, that's straight up ludicrous, and even though I have comprehensive insurance, I really don't want conventional repair because it means ripping the car apart.

Any suggestions on reputable PDR specialists in the NYC/NJ area?

Find the one near you. All dent wizard guys seem to be pretty decent.
I never actually got my dent removed by them though since I'm planning on just getting a new trunk, but I took it to 3 different dent wizard guys and they all said they could do it and it would be no more than 300. They did say that because its on a body line, there may be some stretch marks once they pull it out.

This is exactly the same responses that I experienced when I went to all of the PDR shops (dent wizard, dent pro, etc.). And one shop even said they would work on it, but only could get it to about 80%. So based on my experience alone - most of these shops do not have the expertise to fix this type of dent. However as I mentioned earlier, there are a few really good tech's (master techs) that will work it through. If you want to get in touch with the tech I know, send me a PM. You never know, he might know of someone out east. I know he teaches as well....

If the dent is about 1inch away from the edge of a panel they cant remove it because their tools dont reach that far... I have 3 dents, 2 out of 3 of them are too close to the edge i dont wanna get it repainted because then you can tell it was repaired and it'll destroy my resale value.. it sucks

Do you mean that it's a problem when the dent is too *close* to the edge? And by edge you mean where the quarter panel meets the door, right?

Yes, where 2 body panels meet. or an EGDE of something... IE: edge of door, or edge or quarter panel. If the dent is dead center in the door w/o any paint chips they can be easily removed.. its the ones closer to the edges and corners that are hard to remove.. they cant get it perfect but they promise to make it atleast 70% better
