E90 335i Catless NY Emissions

Hi

I just bought a 335i from another state and it's catless. Is there any way for me to pass a NY state inspection without changing the exhaust setup? I bought the car knowing that most likely I will have to go back to stock, but I'm just fishing for ideas.

Thanks

Find out how many monitors can be "not ready" in NJ you can have 1 i believe without failing, this case would be the Cats. You WILL need either a jb4 BEF or a MHD Tune to have the CEL light off, Allegedly, since any of this is illegal so Im speaking hypothetically in theory.

Thanks for the response. I have and MHD tune, but am still getting a CEL. Should I reflash it?

I'm getting 3 codes they are as follows: P114D P114B and P0041. Also when I do a monitor test I am failing Cat, EVAP and HRT.

Are you pulling those codes through MHD or a code reader? They look like generic codes, not BMW 4 Digit codes

I just have a generic code reader that I got them from. Should I purchase the MHD code reader?

Absolutely. If you are anything, even completely stock, you need a code reader for BMW.

Just went out and used MHD to view it. Here's what it's saying.

Clear the codes and see if they come back

You might need new o2 sensors. If you had a fancy autel scanner you could check o2 sensor voltages to confirm

We have to pass emissions in the Missouri county we live in. After much experimenting, I used an O2 sensor 'tuner' to make things ready. The problem I faced was if you tell MHD you have aftermarket down pipes via unchecking the box during programming, the state computer reads this as catalyst and O2 unsupported programming. This failed the car immediately for a 'Comm Fail', regardless of catalyst readiness. I had to tell MHD I had factory cats (check the box) to avoid this unsupported error. The shop recognized I had a tune and said they see the error often on tuned cars. The O2 sensor tuner worked fine and the car was quickly in a 'ready' state and passed inpection.

It's even more difficult to sort out when there are other problems with the car. It can be hard to tell what's causing the problems for not ready.

Do you think I should do all 4 just to eliminate the problem/possibility of the sensors being bad?

Did you use a DP fix and an "02 tuner"? Or do you actually have cats?

I reset the codes again and they went away. Going to try the DP fix and hopefully everything works out.

The rear most two are for the emissions system so those I'd replace first (they're also the cheapest and easiest to access)

DP Fix = O2 tuner, same device. Sorry if I mixed up the terminology. My car has cat-less down pipes (no cats). I still had to tell MHD the car had OEM exhaust. Otherwise MHD would tune them out and the State inspection computer would see this as 'unsupported-programming error' and fail the car immediately.

Made my own based on a forum post at ***********: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-d4...ew?usp=sharing

The instructions are for inserting it into a JB4 harness but it can be easily adapted to inserting directly into the DME harness.

I purchased one of these and should have it shortly. I'm pretty much in the same scenario as you then. Hopefully everything works!
