Rear differential locking ring
I have an 09 335 (6MT) with a Wavetrac LSD. Ever since installing it I've been noticing some metallic "ting" or "ping" noise when I let the clutch out switching direction from forward to reverse. Its absolutely audible from half way down the street.
Going underneath I took this video just rotating the driveshaft between the gear slack and replicate it. Sound is coming from the front end of the diff, not internally like I originally thought. I remember N52 diffs having this noise somewhere with the nut and the pinion spline? is it possible it could be the end of the driveshaft although I don't know what could be at that end; its just the 2 giant nuts attaching https://www.flickr.com/photos/154964.../shares/45qsn4 Last edited by neilvan; 08-05-2022 at 09:14 AM.. |

Finally did some more digging into this. It seems to be the stub shafts on either side moving in and out when the differential switches directions. Both the stock diff (328) and quaife (335) on our other E90s dont do this or dont move nearly as much.
MY question now is what exactly does the stub shaft locking ring sit into? is it the case/bearing or the differential unit itself? |
