FYI...

Oil in the induction air = carbon build up - period!

I will have my engine cleaned with my next service.

I just had mine blasted at 48,000 miles and I should have waited closer to 70,000 miles. I will not have it done again since I only plan to keep the car till around 100,000 miles.

Garage List
From everything I have seen, the N55 is good until 100K or more. I have the BMS OCC and I only ever see a slight oil film in it. I got paranoid when I saw all the N54 engines coked up, so I bought the OCC for my N55 which was a waste of money.

Daniel at Lilly Automotive sent me a reply to my PM requesting to have him walnut blast my N55. When I first contacted him he told me that he hadn't done a N55 blasting yet. Today his message said he just blasted a N55 and it could have waited. He was saying that he recommends getting it done at 120k miles on the N55. Daniel is well know on the forum for the Florida members are is a highly recommended BMW mechanic.

N55 doesn't see nearly as much blowby as the N54. There's very little point in modifying the PCV system on the N55 or adding an oil catch can.

Its literally a NON issue with N55. How do i know ?

I removed my intake manifold for other maintenance. When i looked down in ot the valves they look very good. Had 80,000 KM at the time.

What oil you use its also a big indicator. LL-01 oil was approved for reducing deposits and sludge. Clean PCV is a clean intake. They clearly fixed this issue with N55. Probably broke something else but engine is cleaner..

I dont think that the blow by is any different but how they deal with blow by is different.

For what it's worth, I have over 193,000 miles on my N55 and haven't had it walnut blasted, and probably never will at this point.

The car has been running with a Pure Stage 1 (+ tune) for the last ~100k miles, and it makes the same power as it always has, and seems to run fine.

While I'm sure there's some build-up, it doesn't seem to matter.

thanks guys…I am having low power/no boost & wondered about buildup (‘11 335i N55 lci w/PPK) thinking while I’m diagnosing 1/2 CEL I wud just do blasting…
dealer sticker in driver’s door jam says to do plugs @46k miles also…I’m at 50k now. I did call local Indy and asked about blasting & he just said N55 “does t need it”….he didn’t give/offer any reasoning. Ohhh… and he said it would be min 2hrs labor @ $120/hr to diag 2C57 code…😏

I'm at 140k with an OCC and haven't bothered to walnut blast it. My OCC is almost empty every oil change. It really is a non-issue. The crankcase vent design is very good at preventing buildup on valves.

At 56K w/o OCC I had no build up on the valves.

My N54 at about that same mileage had bad carbon build up and went in for a walnut blast.
