What this video drives home for me are it's not just range anxiety. It's finding a charger, having to plan your route where you can make it to chargers, how long a wait will there be when you get to a charger if others are ahead of you, how long will it take to fully charge. I think this guy was spending 30 min minimum and others were 1 1/2 hours to charge.

Sorry, a great deal of my trips are longer drives, so no thank you.

I don't think the EV fan boy even watched the video.

I think it's great that people are finally doing this type of analysis to highlight pros and cons of each platform and not blindly saying EV is the only way.

Battery swaps will be like VHS tapes, made obsolete by new battery tech.

Nio has expanded battery swaps to Norway. Still very much beta. Don't expect battery swaps to ever be a thing in US.

5 minute battery pack swap AND 3s 0-60 ? No. Probably golf cart level power in those vehicles. If it's even real.

And so then they store the depleted batteries until a diesel trailer comes to pick them up and bring them to a charging center .. or are you going to have massive swap stations that need their own substation all over residential areas? This won't fit in the garden center at home depot like a Propane swap.

Imagine in the 1960s-70s having public admiration of soviet tech in its infancy? You should move to Beijing. They are decades ahead of us with EV and as a blind faith follower you will fit right in to their citizenry

Battery swaps are real. Look up Nio. Most recent video I have seen shows customer car in Norway getting swap. Program is still very much in beta mode. Scaling up the swap infrastructure for use in US would never be viable. By time it was ready for prime time, solid state batteries will make swaps unnecessary. The fact that swaps are even being considered is proof current battery tech is not ideal and the main aspect holding back EV's.

It will happen when all EV's are made with a uniform wattage, size, and shape. That will never happen here, too many use case scenarios that require too many versions of EV's.

In a mono-culture where everyone has the same (government regulated) needs (by design), it can be made functional. This is why you do see it in some places. Places most of us don't want to live.

I agree they are "real" but only in beta. Something in beta is by definition unproven, so it is another little EV experiment. Maybe they can use a windmill farm to recharge the depleted batteries when it goes live

Yikes, I'm just up north of you in Oregon where a lot of the "extra" power California needs is coming from. It's 6.7 cents residential in my small town. Cheap enough that solar doesn't ever break even in most use-cases.

Just imagine what it's going to cost when California needs even more power...

Exactly. The only benefit early adopters had was basically free electricity. Once (if) EVs become mainstream, prepare for huge price increases in electricity. Makes you wonder what we are really gaining here (besides the marginal reduction in emissions). I suppose the maintenance costs are theoretically less on an EV, but until they make batteries last past 100K without losing a significant chunk of their range, I don't see the benefit from a cost perspective long-term. What is the maintenance cost of ICE-unique components (oil, spark plugs, fuel filters etc.) over the same period of time that a modern battery pack lasts?

Forget the price.

Anyone that is willing to sit an hour at a charging station every 150-200 miles in the winter desperately needs a hobby/friends. And that's not even considering every other manufacturer that isn't Tesla, some that don't even get 100 miles when it's cold.

I've seen videos of people talking about how great it is - you go to the cafe, read a book, watch some Netflix... Like bro, how depressing is your life?

would have cost more if not for the free charger

he also sent the ICE to find alternative route as one of the roads were non operational and he didn't want to run out of charge looking for a way forward

and the ICE was waiting around while he charged
