Thanks for sharing, truly enjoyed that.

At the 25:45 time mark, that is part of what makes this engine, and those that were derived from it so special. The N74 in the M760i is a direct descendant of the N70. Peak torque is delivered at 1550 RPM, and holds out to ~6K, with a 7K redline. It's almost like driving an EV, but it so isn't.

I remember when this car came out. The hype was well deserved.

Against today's cars, I don't think it's even in the top 3 McLarens much less best car of all time.

While there are a handful of current cars that do beat the 240 mph top speed, this stat means nothing to me. I judge cars by performance (acceleration, braking, cornering, handling feel, ease of use) along with looks, quality of materials, comfort, reliability, electronics, features, and sound.

I think the following cars are "better"

458, 488, 812 Superfast, LaFerrari, *SF90, 918, P1, *Senna, 765, 675LT, GT3RS, GT4RS, C8Z06, Evija, M5CS, M3 Comp, any *Bugatti

* I'm not really a fan of the looks of the Bugatti, Senna or SF90 but they're all objectively better

You're entitled to your opinion but the basis of your argument is kind of silly. You're comparing modern day cars to a car built in 1992 and the F1 is still faster than most of them.

We're all BMW fans here but even saying M5CS and M3 in the same sentence is on some next level autism.

You should watch the video because I think you're missing the big picture here. Every car you listed isn't even worth 1/10th the value of a McLaren F1. This was the only no compromise car ever built and to this day is the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world. They literally stripped it, DETUNED the engine and won the 24 hours of LeMans.

Even if you released it today, it would be a news worty super car. That it was released 30 some years ago is hard to fathom.

Like the F40 and Veyron, it will always live in a class of it's own taking into consideration the time it was made.

I love the F40, but it wasn't alone.

True in spirit, but not true in the US. You couldn't legally drive a 959 in the US for a very, very long time (well after the F40 was discontinued). For a time, the F40 was in a class of it's own, and to many it still is because of that ^.

Both were in Need for Speed though, and that's as close as any of us got to either.

Good point.

I've seen an F40 driven on the street in the mid 1990's in Portland, but I've never seen a 959 anywhere.

If I had a choice between the two (and could actually drive it), I'd take the 959.

I have a good friend who worked for a guy that let him drive his F40. I've always been jealous of that. Lipshy Porsche had a gold 959 in the early 90s on their lot in Dallas. I assume it wasn't street legal, but I still went and drooled on it a few times, even in a dumb color. I still remember how wide the door sills were, they really don't look that weird in photos, but do in person. When I worked in a Frankfurt in the mid aughts, I saw three on the road, only saw one F40 while over there.

One 959 was a pretty ratty looking white one parked in Zurich with over 200k km on it. I shudder to think what the cumulative maintenance on that had been.

Back on topic, I've seen four F1s, and it remains my favorite modern-ish car. Nothing will ever have the headroom over all other cars it had when it landed. Plus it's a manual, so it's automatically cooler than any of the new (non Gordon Murray) things.

A good video. Thanks for posting.

It was indeed in a class of its own when released, even now decades later where the power war has gone stratospheric, it retains so many unique features to make it so special.

truly an amazing car. there will never be anything like it again.

- it won lemans outright even beating out the prototype stuff. the car had minimal changes from the road car.

- it trapped 138 in the quarter. thats faster than a z06 and on par with a F8 tributo. put some new proper tires on it and its probably a low 10 second car... and its doing that with a manual box, no turbos, no launch control!

- it weighs 2600 pounds. comparing it to a 3900 pound SF90 is just hilarious. thats like saying a nissan GTR is better than a cayman.

- the only car that comes close imo is the carrera GT. The modern exotics are all automatic, turbocharged, and heavy.
