Loud Clunk from Rear Suspension
Hey Everyone - was hoping for some help with a problem:
I'm from Westchester County, NY where the roads aren't great, but I avoid my potholes. Driving home last night I start to hear a loud metal on metal clunking noise when the suspension is under load at slower speeds (I haven't driven it at highway speeds yet with this noise). Seems to be coming from the rear of the car, possibly left rear or center. My best guess is a rear shock mount or loose shock. Any input? Would like to have some clarification on the issue, car is being checked out today as we speak. Car is riding on Dinan Stage 1 suspension with OEM 225Ms. Pace BMW did the original install for the suspension, could it have vibrated loose from the larger 19s (and not being torqued correctly in the initial install) over rough roads? I welcome all opinions, thanks! - R |

Yeah I've had some real issues with them. Now when I walk in there they couldn't be nicer (of course), but it took having to go to hell and back to get to that point. Basically I watch them like hawks and will only have them perform warranty maintenance.

Might be a sway bar end link

Just heard back from my indy mechanic who's telling me that the rear shock mount is bad. However, Pace replaced one claiming that they were given the wrong part on the initial installation (which they botched). I don't quite understand how the car has chewed through 2 of these at 15k miles. Anybody else have this kind of trouble from Dinan RSMs?

My recommendation is to take the car to MT Kisco. They do great service and the service advisers are very knowledgeable they also have a guy that's been working for bmw for like 30+ years and he totally knows his shit about these cars. |

I bought my car at Pace BMW and had it serviced there twice... If that.. Each time I went in they where nice but I would find problems with the work performed.
Also when I bought the car there was a slight tear in the seat, they told me they where going to replace the seat. Turns out they only patched it and since I picked it up later in the afternoon I was not able to see this. And when I contacted them about why the seat was not replaced they gave me the run around about it, and then said that they never agreed to do it.. even though i had it in writing.. I have not had a single complaint with BMW of Ridgefield in CT. |

I've had the rear sway bar bushings make nasty noises on previous vehicles. A little lube fixed it up. It was more of a "bang" type noise.
Metal on metal sounds like something else (sway bar end links, broken sway bar end link -- had that on my truck and it made nasty metialic noises). |

It's basically like a banging, metal on metal knocking if you will. I've been told its a failed rear shock mount which is plausible, but I just can't believe that the car would chew one up so quickly. It just turned 15k yesterday and those RSMs have only been on for 8k miles or so since the stage 1 suspension was installed.

I am telling you, Pace BMW does not care about your car. They provide the worst service. Infact they mark up their parts almost 100%. I recently purchased m3 hood springs for my new hood, getbmwparts.com has the parts listed for 41.26, realoem list msrp for 43.62, while armed with this information i went to pace bmw in portchester and requested the price for this parts. Guy at the parts counter tells me 71.00 each. I told him to keep them. I also had the realoem and getbmwparts.com print out. so 84.00 vs 140.00? That place is out of their mind. I've reported them to BMW NA several times. After BMW NA has failed to do anything about their horrible service I've changed dealerships, I now have to drive 45 mins out of my way to get the service I deserve. |

Certainly Joe I completely agree with you. Don't even get started on Catena BMW in White Plains

The rear strut can be loose... Or it could just be the rear seats folding metals parts that are loose also ... Been there

I occasionally have odd sounds coming from the rear...of my car that is.
I do have an aftermarket rear sway bar and M3 bushings so who the hell knows...in the spring I'll have Prestige BMW go over the car. |

FYI this was a failed Rear Shock Mount from improper installation. The entire rear suspension was replaced by a qualified Dinan installer because of improper installation by the dealer (who is also supposedly authorized by Dinan).
