OBDII scanner type?

My B-I-L has a KKL type OBDII scanner (hooked up via serial to a laptop) that he uses on his Jetta. He downloaded some software (3 different apps) that is supposed to work with BMW, but we couldn't get info out of my e90. The software would attempt to connect, and the light on the scanner lit up, but nothing was being returned. Anyone know if we need a different type of scanner?

Update: I was told it uses a CAN-BUS scanner, not the KKL type.

i've just looked at the OBD-ii connector on the 320i, the CAN Bus pins do not seem to be installed, this could suggest that the CAN bus is not accessible from the OBD-ii connector

VAG-COM software can read the E90's ecu?

We tried VAG-COM and it did not read the e90 ECU.
