Plenty of new details and interesting discussion points, ahead of the drive reviews with interviews with M2 Engineering and Product Managers.
Topics such as; G87 vs F87 improvements Chassis stiffness M4 comparison Driving impressions M2 Competition M2 CS M2 Xdrive Manual and Auto transmissions M Performance HAS kit Cast wheels and rim weight Driving Assistant systems Current and future colors In the interview when asked about Comp or CS he is deliberately vague but he does say; ".... not in a time scale that is very close. Is there room for a Comp or CS, yes of course there is room" After being asked about the Xdrive he is slightly less vague, and he does say; "[ The Xdrive ]... Is a lifecycle ahead of us, which is quite long" There's no firm "no" to either question which is positive. Reading between the lines it's possible to deduce that the LCI will likely bring a Comp with Xdrive. But who knows, the only thing for sure right now is you can by a non-comp, non-CS, rwd fun machine in an auto or manual which is pretty cool! https://youtu.be/rJt9tJUHme4 |

Sure:
The M2 is a unique driving experience and product, following the F87 shortcomings: power, and chassis and suspension issues. It is a markedly different driving experience to the other M products with a focus on fun first, and best enjoyed with a manual. Cost cutting to reach a price point played a role, but the performance parts with forged wheels, etc can fix some things if you have the means. In other words, this is the fun car, and the G80/82 are for grown ups only. Also limited paint options were likely the result of something out of their control - and only five options are what were left with for two years. |

Seriously, the video answers a bunch of questions and is worth watching. You don't even need to be staring at your screen, it's just three guys talking. You can play it in the background while doing something else and just listen to it. And you're also giving BMWBLOG another view which helps them bring more content like this in the future.

That was a good video, thanks! I appreciate the honesty about meeting pricing goals and such.
I especially liked "It's a driver's car...," when talking about not focusing on all the assistance widgets.

I actually thought that was just marketing speak since it's already got driving assistance on the car but doesn't have all the bells and whistles. Nothing but cost cutting IMO. The 360 cameras are not driving nannies, they're primarily used for parking and are especially valuable if you want to avoid curbing your wheels. Especially important if you get expensive forged OEM or aftermarket wheels to replace the cast ones.

Good point. Maybe they're spinning a tale with cooling concerns.

I mean I would still have liked to have these features. Offering the possibility as an option would have been great for people that DD especially since the M240i has it.

Or scraping the lip and/or destroying the ppf on a parking curb (the sensors on the G42 M240 do not pick up the parking curbs in parking lots). Without the 360 view, you better be good to know how close you are getting. |

Still don’t understand the limitations at a new plant for doing more paint options. It’s not like the plant just opened. They have been producing the 3 series now for almost 4 years. The M guy on the right seems to imply that it is more of an issue with the plant being in Mexico but more paint colors are eventually coming.Would have been nice for the guy doing the interview to press them a bit more on some of there answers but it sounds like there will be a Competition and CS G87.

Which will not mean squat if one wants a G87 within a manual as either of those will be available with the ZF 8 speed auto only. We know with near certainty that the manual trans is limited to torque of 406 ft-lbs.

Had a long trip today so actually had time to watch the video from watching the video and hearing them explain why no plans for competition or xDrive or no 360 or why using cast Wheels instead of forged wheels and they're dancing around with questions like colors available it seems to be there clearly positioning this car as an entry level M series and keeping costs down as much as possible to make it affordable for entry. They're basically saying if you want more then step up to an M3 or M4. For many that's the perfect package and all the car that they need at the right price point. I think all the reviews will reflect that message BMW is trying to pass of a fun little car with a manual transmission you can't get with any of the other models. Funny about the explanation of why they decided to go with cast Wheels over forged but how much are the optional carbon seats? |
