Reasonable approach. I've had the car for about 5 days and haven't been able to drive for more than 20min at time due to work. Currently 50miles and that was mostly drive from the dealership. I will try out MDM this wknd. And slowly see how the slip progresses in each setting (10!). With my schedule may take a while to even get to break in service. Lot to learn.

It really appeals to my inner (old) engineer nerd part.

I was in a similar position except with the F87 M2C vs E92 about a year and a half ago. I’ve also put ~100 miles on a G82 M4 last year.

I ended up with the E92 because I found it more fun to drive on a daily basis than the M2. The M2 was really fun at the track or when being driven 8/10s. Just driving it around town, I didn’t get much out of it. The E9x is fun at any speed since the car does much less feedback filtering. I probably never exceeds 50mph in my 4 mile commute but I still love driving it with the e9x.

1. Hydraulic steering: I had never driven a car with hydraulic steering before the E9x but it makes driving at any speed fun. Whereas the modern EPS systems take a lot of the joy out of driving.

2. Sound: I probably spend half my commute needlessly accelerating the car to listen to the sound. My commute is short, but just listening to the car rev from 2-4k with the windows down is amazing. My car is catless though so it’s pretty loud. The S55/S85 sound bad.

I bought a 5 year warranty with the car for $3500 (no deductible). So far I’ve used it on a leaky differential that I knew the car had when I bought it.

I purchased my E90 M3 in 2012 and sold it in 2020 after putting some 90K miles on it. Loved every moment of it.

Maintenance wise it is fairly reliable.

15K track miles and I had to change the throttle sensors at 60K, bearings at 60K and valve cover gaskets at 100K. That speaks about the reliability of the engine. Catless, Epic tune, air filter, pulleys and it was almost 400WHP and the sound was intoxicating.

Bushings, brakes etc were consumables from tracking it (but retired it around 80K miles as I built a dedicated race car).

DCT pan leak is again wear and tear but there was no major issue with the chassis during my 90K mile ownership. The catless pipe and the tune WAKES up the engine. To say it has no or low torque is a fallacy at that point

Nostalgia is strong and the mind seems to play tricks on us. Going with an E9X or the new M2 is not a sensible or a mental exercise. Trust your heart, it will take you to the right place.

My M2 is on order. I wanted a manual and a turbo car (with a tune the S58 makes over 500whp) which is nimble.

Action starts around 1:20 mark.

That said, from my experience on track and a number of hours on the wet 1/2 mile skidpad with the M2C, if you recalibrate your brain a bit, you can feel "some" feedback approaching/at/over the limit of adhesion up front with the EPS. It's feedback that is there but in weaker form compared to a nice HPS rack like in the E90 M3.

Back-to-back driving the two cars will have the vast majority saying "BMW EPS is numb, no feel". I took a different tack with the M2C on the skidpad and asked myself to hunt for and learn what incipient limit feedback was present, how it felt, and how I could adapt to it. BMW revised programming for the M2C/CS (they use the same coding) compared to the OG, and it was improved somewhat.
I agree. It took some time to adjust to the Steering feedback on my M2C. I programmed mine with the GTS EPS which improved somewhat . You can also FDL code your Brake and Diffrential for the track. Contact Kubax86 for coding.

The front grip is also phenomenal. I have never driven with 275/35/19 in the front on any of my M cars.

I used 3-7 on the street. MDM is safe for the street. Best place to test those settings is at AutoX

It's not super rigorous, but Joe Achilles did try out all 10 traction settings a year ago in a G82. I assume the amount of allowed slip will be similar on a G87.
