Rear vent thumb-dial repair

I wonder if this might be a weird one but has anyone ever come across one of the thumb-wheels for the vents having been pushed too far in?

I presume the last owner may have carried something in he back which has pushed on the left vents thumb-wheel causing it to push in.

Is it easy to take this area apart to gain access to take a look at pulling this back out? What do you all think?
