Hi there,
I just recently purchased a 335d. Recently as in, I still have temp tags on the vehicle and got this warning before I could even get the car in for state inspection. My 335d only has 60,000 miles and it just popped up with an error saying "Wrong diesel exhaust fluid". The codes that popped up were (41F9), (474C), (4748), and (4D16). From what I have read on different forums is that it could be anything from bad NOx sensors to just a bad system. My only issue is that it was on cars with 100,000+ miles and mine does not have anywhere near as much. My problem with this is that I need to be able to pass state inspection and this would obviously fail it. But I do not want to spend the money to get it if there is an issue with the system. This is because i planned on deleting the abcs the moment i got it state inspected. I have no idea what to do. My only idea was that i get DUDMD stage 2 (since i planned on getting it anyway) to delete the need for the scr etc. Does anyone have any idea if i would get through state inspection with a tune like that to conceal that fact that something is messed up with my scr system? If you have any ideas please let me know! |

The vehicle mileage has very little to do with diesel emissions issues.
parts quality, past repairs and driving style are key variables Moreover, the fact that 12+ year old diesel has only 60K miles may indicate that car - was driven in the city (not great for diesel) - have stale DEF and or/blocked metering unit (likely source of the 4D16) https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...36718-9999.pdf - check thermostat: 88C after warmup, replace if < 85C ($) - drain old DEF from both active and passive tanks and check concentration with refractometer ($) - test fresh DEF with refractometer and refill SCR tanks ($) - clean metering unit and mixer, run ISTA dosing metering unit test (-) - if ^ steps does not help: test/replace NOx sensors ($$). - if ^ steps does not help - replace SCR cat ($$$). Any tune will fail inspection in CA, not sure about Maryland.

Maryland doesn't do diesel emissions so you can do a full tune and delete, take it to a small mom&pop gas station inspection shop and they wouldn't know what to look for plus they dont check OBD2 readings. Buddy just did it for his diesel Passat.

I posted this on my 535d in 2020:
"The past week, I've gotten the low DEF warning, 1000 miles to go before shutdown. I filled the DEF 3 days ago and the warning won't quit. I'm guessing a variation on the bad sensor problem. My backup car is a Trabant. What do I do? The dealer said the only thing to do is replace the entire tank, sensor cannot be done separately. $2400 parts and labor. Meanwhile, I'm down to about 650 miles before the computer will block any restart. Update: DUDMD has told me they can do Stage 1 with SCR and DEF tank delete, and I wouldn't have to remove any exhaust system components. I think I will choose this route for obvious reasons. The main tuning competitor either can't or won't do a Stage 1 with those deletes included. Would have to go to Stage 2, with full system change out. Since I've also got to buy a new set of tires, I am happy to hear that I have this option. And.... Now running Stage1 tune, DEF message is gone, and the car kicks ass! Saved $1900 too." Still good in 2023. DUDMD now in Utah, wonder why? (WA sucks) Maybe this will help, or else sell car to me in MO. |
