Used M2s Auto vs Manual

I am noticing that of the 20 or so used M2s for sale on Autotrader right now, only 1/4 of them are Autos. Is the manual take rate that high or were most of the HEA cars manual or something? Curious if anyone has any thoughts. I’ve seen a couple used ones pop up in my area but they have been only manuals

Lots of random thoughts.

Take rate on F87s (in NA) was 50% IIRC. I doubt that the take rate on the G87 is much more than that. So it's probably sampling error. It's easy enough to come up with plausible causes:

1) small sample size, 20 is too small, so randomness alone is skewing results

2) manuals have a higher SELL rate. Maybe purists decide they don't like the shifter feel. Or life circumstances change and the buyer nows need an automatic car that their SO/teenager can drive. Stuff like that.

Unless BMW HQ reports the numbers, we will probably never know.

Also I personally know someone that ordered one and thinking they will make 10K right way when it sells. Lol. Maybe some people are buying with this same mindset.

Have no info on the number of HEA cars fitted with an automatic vs. a manual.

I bought my M2 off the showroom floor. I was "lucky" in that I preferred a manual and it had a manual.

Love my M2 and its 6-speed. But it is not an "easy" car to drive.

It takes some extra bit of concentration. When I pay attention the car it is very smooth. But when I don't...

Believe it or not I have considered buying a M2 with an automatic and having both cars to drive decide which one I like the best.

I probably won't do this. Cheaper I think to just "learn" to give the M2 the attention/focus it requires.

But I'm sure some owners have decided the M2 with the 6-speed is not for them. And this is why there is a fair number of used ones available.

I have a feeling a few people took the HEA while waiting for their allocation and now that their custom build is on its way they are done with the HEA. That sample of people might lean more towards MT buyers.

Just a hunch, don't take it too serious.

Lol at the prices of used G87's. I get that people in some areas cannot get a new one but ain't no way I would pay that much for a used one. I wish there was a way to see what these used ones will actually sell for.

I'd say of the 20 or so I've built for my store...15 of them have been manual.

Early adopters and pre-orders are all of that, right? You been putting any out on the showroom floor?

I bet the take rate for walk-ins will be a lot lower.

These are orders dating back to summer of '22.

Of the 13 still in my pipeline, 9/13 are manual. Most of the action on these cars happened before the launch in April.

Yeah, that tracks. As the hard-core early adopters clear out, I hope the take rate remains good. (I still worry about the MT being dropped for the LCI.)

Times are a changing.

Auto is faster in the hands of professionals, if you like to drive quickly it’s more fun with paddles.

Gearing on the manual sucks. GT4 plagued with same issue.

Have had several cars with automatics and paddles: Scat Pack, Hellcat, MINI S (7-speed sport transmission), BMW 230i. Under hard acceleration whether I let the automatic shift or used the paddle shift speed as best I could tell the shift speed was the same. It was quick, too.

Word was with the Hellcat the best launch was obtained by putting the transmission in manual mode and then put the transmission in 2nd gear. Then take off and concurrently move the shift lever to automatic mode and let the transmission up shift from 1st to 2nd and so on. Using the paddle it was too easy to miss time the shift and hit the rev limiter. Hitting the rev limiter kills acceleration.

After my first 4000km of use I have found the gearing on the manual is just fine, 3rd especially is as epic as on any previous BMW for high speed overtaking with limited space on 2-lane roads, without unsettling the car with a gear change under hard braking into the gap. Manual is well matched to the 4,000 to 7,200RPM rev range.

The manual is the only reason I got the m2 over the m240i. The m240i is everything anyone could ever want, and if it came with a manual I would have gone for it. The b58 engine is ridiculously underappreciated. I would have waited for the m2c if I had decent hope it would be manual, the manual with such power is the combo worth having.

Hard disagree. Idk if you've driven older manuals, but modern BMWs (F8X and G8x) are by far the easiest manuals I've ever driven. They are EXTREMELY forgiving, have throttle assists that make it near impossible to stall, and things like auto rev matching. I've taught multiple people how to drive stick in my F87 and they thought it was significantly easier than other cars they had attempted in.

How is it not an 'easy' car to drive? It literally could not get any easier.

Yes only the 'enthusiasts' with manuals enjoy cars and driving lol.

An 'enthusiast' is not defined by their gearbox. We are all driving and enjoying what cars bring us.

The 'toxic-purist' enthusiasts complaining constantly are ruining being an 'enthusiast' on most magazines and forums. Well done!

Oh you own a manual. Good for you. Was your choice. Just like the auto was for others - yet we enjoy our cars as much.

Gods yes. 1970s trash manuals with garbage (or no) syncros, requiring actual double-clutching; underpowered NA engines with a sweet spot of like 2000 RPMs band, max; clunky assemblies with so much wobble you could totally miss the gate. And clutches wore out so much faster.

Or, ya know, any motorcycle built before about 1990.

M2 is trivial to shift even compared to my 2000 Celica, I have NO idea how people could think it's hard.
