What surprised you/were not expecting about the G87?

I just found out the M logo colors on the side doors illuminate all red if you open the door with the engine running. Pretty cool surprise.

What else have you found that surprised you/were not expecting about the G87?

Nothing in terms of features but I find it easier to drive than my 330i due to the shorter wheel base and therefore I don't miss the 360 degree cameras as much as I thought I might.

You will also note they glow red if there is something approaching from behind the open door.

Garage List
Surprises:
  • NFC missing from phone charger in manual, and phone charge is in armrest console.
  • Clutch is heavier than the other Ms I've had
  • After reading reviews about lack of torque down low, I don't find that to be the case.
  • While only 3 1/2" shorter than my F82, the back seat, trunk and gas tank are all much smaller.
Not a surprise, but it's a fun car to drive. Getting break in service done next Tuesday.

This was actually the biggest surprise to me, but the opposite way. Coming from an OG F87, I knew there would be a difference between how the G87 puts down it's power but I didn't expect the F87 to feel that much faster around town as it did. The F87 fell off up top where the G87 doesn't but I honestly was expecting more from a 100HP jump. Maybe the weight of the car has a lot to do with it as well.

But don't get me wrong, I am still loving the car.

Both cars make the same torque of 500Nm at about 2500RPM which correlates with 131kW (176bhp), below that the F87 is higher, above that the G87 is higher.

In the G87 I have to be more mindful to be in a lower gear in the around town situations I am referring to (3rd/4th gear, 30-60MPH, etc) if I need to make a quick move for whatever reason.

That would be the case, as you are below 2500RPM in those gears at those speeds. Best to keep the G87 at 3000RPM and above for the best acceleration, as would be expected in a sporty car that should be biased towards to top-end power.

There are several reasons why it doesn't have the low end pull that the F87 did. Torque on the S58 is the same as the S55 @ 406 ft-lbs, but the S58 needs to spin up an extra 300 RPM to get there. The S58 however keeps pulling all the way to 5870 whereas the S55 tapers off at 5200 RPM which is why it has more in the top end.

S55 Max. torque Nm 550
@ 2350-5200 RPM

S58 Max. torque Nm 550
@ 2650–5870 RPM

And as you mentioned the G87 is a lot heavier than the F87 and simple physics tells us it takes longer to get an object with more mass up the speed than one that's lighter. Next, the MT on the G87 is a direct carry over from the F87. They did nothing to change the gearing to better match the power delivery of the S58.

With the AT however ///M geared and tuned the transmission to match the S58. That's why you'll see in reviews where they'll say the AT G87 feels like a completely different car compared to the MT, it's much more eager.

Camera… after parking I get out and realize how far back I still am lol I have a big fear of hitting a curb while parking bc I’ve done it before. How does the 2 series get this and not the m2???

Yeah this was something I noticed too, coming from a B58 in X3 M40i.

I was able to recreate a throttle house moment the other day. I live in SF. Lots of hills. Was in 3rd going up hill at like 1500 rpm. Stepped on it without shifting to 2nd, and the delay in power delivery was comical.

This is obviously a driver error, as clearly not in right gear. But the B58 has so much low down torque, where even in heavier X3, it feels more mighty in the specific scenario.

Yeah the B58 is probably better suited to where I do 85% of my driving and if the Supra had a back seat (for the dogs) I would have taken that with a manual BUT other than looks I'd take my G87 everywhere else like interior, tech, etc etc.

I am sure my driving style will adapt eventually.

Yeah lack of backseat chopped the Supra off the list for me. If the new M240i came in a manual, I would have strongly considered it.

Agreed but at least we knew about it going in and were not surprised. But annoying to say the least that lower end vehicles do and a true M car does not.

Idk about all that - they just blink red if the doors open to let oncoming cars know a door is open.

Go out and try it. Take your kid with you if you have one, my daughter loved it - I first saw it when I turned the car off and it gives you that pre-ventilation notice on the screen and says “bmw has a surprise for you,” or it’s just in “all apps” called happy Halloween or something.

Lots of comments here about S58 vs B58 vs S55. Having spent a lot of time with B58s (put 10k miles on a Supra and currently have 30k miles on my wife's X3 m40i), and now having clocked 2k miles in my G87, I really think the B58 is better suited for roads while the S58 is happier at the track.

It's strange, when I get in the X3 after driving the M2 for a while, the heavier, slower SUV somehow feels lighter and quicker than the M2. I like the M2 and the tech is great compared to the Supra, but I don't think I'm in love...
