Record M2 Production in September at SLP - 2,115

The Newest BMW Plant at San Luis Potosi (SLP) is firing on all cylinders and reaching record production.

In September it Produced 12,566 M2s, 2-Series and 3-Series (details below), which is an annualized rate of over 150,000 vehicle per year.

Congrats to BMW and the SLP team.

Specifically, in September they produced a record 2,115 G87 M2s, for a total of 14,495 produced to-date (end of Sept).

And most notably on Oct 4th, they produced the most important M2 of all - mine in BSM. Lets go ship it.

Well production of the G87 M2 is now running at a 25K+ annualized rate.

May be the most produced M car ever if it goes for a few years like that.

BMW discounts have started with their EVs and the M4 convertible. They are already massive there.

Eventually that enthusiast demand (that is all of us here) will get their M2s, and pricing should soften up.

I really don't understand how come some people still talk about paying over MSRP for G87s. That is like another galaxy from market reality. I have passed on multiple M2s at MSRP available for immediate delivery.

First year production is typically the highest for any vehicle/updated model sold.

I find it hard to believe they build that many. I rarely see any 2 series on the road. That was part of the attraction of buying an M2 is that I figured there won’t be many around.

I’m opposite, if I’m hustling on a public road, I prefer to blend in (unlike an Emira for example)

Do you see 2 series everywhere? I see 3 and 4 but rarely 2 or even 1s anymore.

No but soon we will. I’m ordering a car next fall. Streets should be flush with 2s by then

Lines up with their plans to offer xDrive in a couple of years, most likely as an M2C. BMW knows how to milk a cash cow.

I mean, in the US, among the sea of trucks and SUVs seeing a "car" is already notable. If you remove the appliance cars like the Camrys, seeing an interesting car is already unusual.

Seeing a 2-door sports coupe, rarer still. And the 2-series is still very rare compared to the 3/4/5 series.

Just remember the 2-series coupe and M2 are only produced in that one factory in Mexico to serve the entire globe.

The M2 production run rate is approximately the same as the C8 Corvette. But while M2 volumes get spread fairly widely around the world, while 90%+ of Corvettes are sold in North America, should give you an idea. You should see 3-4 C8s for each M2 you see.

I have seen zero on the road, other than the one I was driving on a test drive. I have seen an additional one on a dealer showroom, and a few on BMW events (one static, several I drove on track).

But regular M2s on the road I have seen zero. I'm pretty sure I'll be the first one in my town - though it would be cool to have a couple of others in town.

Unless some really random luck happens the first one I will see will be the one I ordered. Not for lack of trying either - I have attended cars and coffee and some German car shows. I have also seen exactly 1 other G42. Granted I work from home and don't get out too much.

Bearing in mind that there are almost 300 million cars in the US, the approximately 3,000 G87s in the US so far will give you 1:100,000 chance of any given car being one (ignoring demographics giving a higher chance of seeing one in more affluent areas).

Interestingly in the Bay Area they seem to be reasonably popular. If I walk down my street there are 2 F87s (seeing them every day almost got me to buy one instead of a G87) and I’ll see at least one F22.

However driving around I see more 3 series. And both are dwarfed in comparison to the number of X3 and X5.
