My wife complained about the exhaust but I told her, "Don't worry about it. It isn't your car." She, in fact, is afraid to drive it. That is partly to do with driving a stick. She is still learning.

... tell her it helps with gas mileage, but either way deal with it because it is your car and she can get over it. Seems pretty simple to me, she shouldn't nag you and expect you to respond nicely.
