Starting to collect parts for manual conversion

Frustrated with fact that most E90's that have a manual gearbox are X-Drive. I'm a bit ignorant to to them but my question is can you use an X drive transmission and leave off the transfer case and front differential to assemble a rwd setup?

I believe the answer is no. See this video for what might be one of the more ambitious conversions I have seen documented in pretty good detail. This guy took his e91 from N52 x-drive to N55 RWD:

I will also add a bit more info for your search: I recently sold my e91 RWD to a close friend who converted it to MT. We found a complete set of the components required for MT conversion on eBay. The vendor had removed the parts from a RWD sedan, I believe. Included were the tranny, drive shaft, rear end, pedal box, shifter, and the plumbing for the clutch. I do not recall if the clutch parts were included (they probably were), but the plan was to go with new flywheel and clutch parts during the conversion. The final tally from the eBay vendor was $1600. Clutch parts and flywheel were another $900 or so.

His conversion was a N54, Doubt I would do a N54/55 swap on mine as I bought an 11 335i a couple years ago.

Well, sure, but he also went to RWD from x-drive, which was ultimately on track with your question. He has responded to my messages in the past. He would be a good source to the question -- can you just install into a RWD car a transmission from an x-drive car.

Look at the different output flanges on the two transmissions, one is supposed to be bolted to a transfer case and the other is bolted directly to the driveshaft. They are not compatible and are also mounted differently in the transmission tunnel.
