Im having amissue on my e92 328ix. got it about 3 months ago and was running smooth besides some gaskets that I need to change. I recently rear ended someone after they slammed on their brakes. damage is mostly cosmetic to driver side passenger bumper. my headlight didn't even crack and the radiator is completely in tact. It ran for 2 days, I parked it in the parking lot I work at and it wouldn't cut back on. I didn't hear it turning over and the battery was good do I assumed it was a the starter. took it out and it was burnt and replaced it with a new one but the car still didn't cut on. I assumed it was the relay so I got a new one and installed it today, but that wasn't the problem either since it still didn't cut on. This is my first time working deeply own my car only ever did basics like spark plugs and battery swaps, so I'm kinda stumped rn. got to save up a few checks to get something to read my sensors. everyone keeps saying I should junk it but I just bought my baby 3 months ago and don't want to let her go that easy. any help is appreciated. And she's literally a baby, only 76,000 miles on it so I'm not trynna give up on her jus yet.

My insurance gone say that it was my fault since I rear ended her and I'm already paying $300 for liability. don't really want my rate to go up if it's something I can fix. but if worst come to worst that's what's gone have to happen

They didn’t want to go through insurance so our insurance rate didn’t go up, no airbags where deployed and no one was hurt. Also I didn’t check it, what am I supposed to be looking out for?

If you don’t/can’t scan for fault codes, it is anyone’s guess as to what is wrong. That’s how modern cars are. Scan for a fault, clear the fault, run under the same conditions and fix what faults remain. Without doing that, you are needlessly replacing parts.

To answer your question, though, if you are getting power, it’s not your battery safety terminal. It’s a pyrotechnic devices that explodes disconnecting the battery from the car in the event of a collision.

Not sure, kind of seems like he needs a mechanic. If his airbags didn’t deploy, his BST wouldn’t fire (unless coincidentally).

No, I don't think you should junk it based on the visible damage and low mileage, but I think you should get a shop to diagnose it. It could be the BST, but that would have happened right at the time of the accident, not partially and eventually letting lose later. Maybe your alternator isn't charging the battery, maybe your battery isn't holding a charge, maybe the positive cable was damaged, who knows...

If you can put the word out to friends & family and find someone local that has a code reader, that'll go a long way to figuring out a few things.

Will do, my friend has the cords to hook up to a windows laptop so once I get the codes I’ll post them here and look around to see if I find a solution. Thanks for not telling me to junk it tho😂

I always thought the BST only blew when an airbag blew, until recently. I read that they may blow in very mild accidents. I’m not sure how true it was or if it applies to the e9x

I’ve never seen one blow and still make contact for a few days then separate.

You can grab the positive battery cable in the trunk and try to wiggle it. If it’s very loose against the terminal, it’s likely bad/blown.

Anyways, read codes first.
Damage looks minimal and can easily be fixed.
300/month for liability is also high.

At least on the e9x with MRS5, it applies the same logic to blow the airbags as it does the BST. Not sure about newer passive restrain systems on BMWs, though.

This is solid gold for e90 systems:

Good read and good to know. Never seen a blown BST without seeing a blow airbag but that article I read threw me off. It must have been for newer or different vehicles.

It does look like some other signals are sent to other modules depending on crash severity, none of which that would stop OPs car from starting.

Wife recently had an altercation with a semi-truck recap and the insurance company wanted to do an expedite total claim without even seeing the car.

The problem is that these days you can find a 2007 - 2011 E9x at fairly low prices and the cost of labor to fix even the tiniest ding in a car is through the roof.

I've got ~$1000 into parts at this point... and more because I have bought OEM parts when I could get them.

Good luck on fixing your car.

Questions:
1) What are Last-7 characters of your VIN? Needed to get correct ISTA wiring diagrams for YOUR vehicle.
2) Do you have a Multimeter? $7 HFT, $10 Amazon, MINIMUM Tool to Diagnose "No Crank".
3) What is Voltage measured at Jumpstart Terminals under Hood? If LESS than 12.0V, what is Voltage measured at battery posts in Trunk?
4) When you simply press START button, WITHOUT pressing Brake/Clutch, does instrument panel light? Does Climate Control Panel Light and Blower controls function? Exterior Lights, Windows & Seats work?
5) When you THEN Press Brake/Clutch, and press START button, is there any single or multiple CLICKS? If so, WHERE does "click" seem to come from, and is it single click, or ratchet-like multiple clicks?
6) I presume your Starter is NOT "cranking" or turning the engine at all?

If Starter does NOT crank engine when START button is pressed with foot on Brake/Clutch, you will need to get codes read in the CAS (Car Access System) Module. If you/friend have/has Windows OS Laptop, quickest, cheapest way to read codes in ALL Modules (NOT just DME/ Engine Module) is to install INPA (BMW Standard Tools) and get $30 to $50 "K+DCAN Cable" to connect Laptop to OBD II Socket. Then use "INPA > Functional Jobs > F4 > F1 Read Error Memory, ALL Modules" and post a ScreenPrint of that INPA Screen.

See attached pdf's:
1) 1 E9x References, which has links to MEGA sites to download INPA;
2) INPA Tutorial Quickstart, which contains example screens and directions on HOW to View, Save, Post codes.

Please provide answers to questions. We can suggest "Next Steps" if you have a Multimeter.

$20K+ per year for car insurance?

You might want to rethink this whole driving thing, period.

Hey got into some legal troubles and couldn’t follow up with you guys for a bit. I ended up getting it to start. I had change the starter but me being a noob at this
whole mechanic thing I didn’t realize the ground cable was shot. Changed it and my baby started right up. Now I’m in the process of changing my valve cover and it’s gaskets. Unfortunately while trying to do that I did brake my cranckcase breather hose that sits behind it so I’ll add that to the list. Thank you everyone for helping and I do apologize I couldn’t keep you guys updated

Meh it's just one of those things. There are so so many "points" on these cars so to speak. Even cleaning the sunroof drains is a little-known maintenance thing haha

Glad you got it figured out!
