318i 2011 Engine turning but not firing
Hi,
I bought a 318i e90 last year, it's done 85K miles, last service was last April by the garage I bought the car from. I have had intermittent non-starting issues (car turns/cranks for about 6-10 seconds then just stops) for a few months now. First I was told to replace the fuel pump, which worked for a few days, and then it happened again. Then I was told it needed a new battery, so got a new battery last month and it's been fine. Then just this last week I'm getting the same issue again, car is turning but not firing. I have a video of this happening too if it helps. I have ran the OBD scanner on the car, the volts are reading 11.5v when off (obviously as I can't start the car), I believe this is too low? Why could this be if I have a new battery? If I try to jump start the car, it works straight away and is fine again. Here is the export from the scanner: DTCs: 7 ---------------------------- 30EA [0x30EA] Status: Pending fault present ---------------------------- 2AF4 [0x2AF4] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 2AF2 [0x2AF2] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 2AF6 [0x2AF6] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 30DA [0x30DA] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 30C1 [0x30C1] Status: Pending fault present during this driving cycle ---------------------------- 2AF9 [0x2AF9] Status: Pending fault present, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ============================ Engine control unitEngine control unit DTCs: 7 ---------------------------- 30EA [0x30EA] Status: Pending fault present ---------------------------- 2AF4 [0x2AF4] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 2AF2 [0x2AF2] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 2AF6 [0x2AF6] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 30DA [0x30DA] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 30C1 [0x30C1] Status: Pending fault present during this driving cycle ---------------------------- 2AF9 [0x2AF9] Status: Pending fault present, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ============================ Transmission control unit No DTC found. ============================ Engine control unit #1Engine control unit #1 DTCs: 7 ---------------------------- 30EA [0x30EA] Status: Pending fault present ---------------------------- 2AF4 [0x2AF4] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 2AF2 [0x2AF2] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 2AF6 [0x2AF6] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 30DA [0x30DA] Status: Test is inhibited by other DTC, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ---------------------------- 30C1 [0x30C1] Status: Pending fault present during this driving cycle ---------------------------- 2AF9 [0x2AF9] Status: Pending fault present, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ============================ SRS/AirbagSRS/Airbag DTCs: 1 ---------------------------- C947 [0xC947] Status: Pending fault present during this driving cycle, Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault present at time of request ============================ DSC/Traction controlDSC/Traction control DTCs: 2 ---------------------------- 5DB2 [0x5DB2] Status: Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault has been present during this drive cycle ---------------------------- 5DB1 [0x5DB1] Status: Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault has been present during this drive cycle ============================ Fuel pump No DTC found. ============================ ABS/DSCABS/DSC DTCs: 2 ---------------------------- 5DB2 [0x5DB2] Status: Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault has been present during this drive cycle ---------------------------- 5DB1 [0x5DB1] Status: Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault has been present during this drive cycle ============================ Steering No DTC found. ============================ Car access systemCar access system DTCs: 1 ---------------------------- A10A [0xA10A] Status: Test conditions are met, Validated and stored in non volatile memory ============================ Center roof moduleCenter roof module DTCs: 1 ---------------------------- DE88 [0xDE88] Status: Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault present at time of request Central module (in driver's footwell) (FRM)Central module (in driver's footwell) (FRM) DTCs: 1 ---------------------------- E598 [0xE598] Status: Test conditions are met, Validated and stored in non volatile memory, Validated fault present at time of request Could any of these fault codes give an idea as to why this is happening? 1) Provide Last-7 Characters of your VIN so we can determine engine & correct ISTA wiring diagrams; 2) State Make/Model of Scan Tool that provided the codes you list, and Make/Model of ANY Scan Tool or Diagnostic Software (INPA/ISTA) available to you. 3) Do you have a DMM (Digital Multimeter) available? If NOT get one (~ $10 US on Amazon) and read Voltage BOTH at (1) Jumpstart Terminals under hood, AND (2) at Battery Posts in Boot. Record & POST those Values. If Battery Voltage at Battery Posts is LESS than 12.0V, charge battery. Thirty Minutes AFTER removing Battery Charger Measure Voltage at Battery Posts, and if > 12.0V, go to step 4. 4) Clear all fault codes (Ignition ON, Engine OFF), and attempt to start (Crank Engine with Starter Motor) for 10 seconds or LESS. What Warning Lights are present on Instrument Cluster during cranking and for 5 seconds thereafter? 5) NOW with Ignition ON, Engine OFF, read ALL Fault Codes and REPORT those fault codes (just ONCE ;-) With that information, someone MAY be able to help.
