2007 335i with the N54 engine.
I got the 2A87 + 3100 codes at some point. Around 120.000km/75k miles. Preceding this I heard the "marbles in a can" noise at idle after a cold start. That noise went away after 30 seconds, sometimes more, sometimes less. But it went away. Very occasionally you'd also hear it when sat at the traffic lights (6AT transmission). If you put it in "N" the noise went away on a WARM engine. This confused me into thinking it's an engine/transmission mount or similar issue. After another month or so I started hear a strange metallic noise at low RPM, typically around 1500-2000 rpm. It was an electronic-like noise with an increasing pitch. The duration of the noise was around half a second and sometimes as long as 2-3 seconds. In the end the problem was a dirty VANOS solenoid but also the Ledge Bearing having been worn. Oddly the exhaust solenoid was noticeably dirtier than the intake one. |

2006 325i getting same code now. Used to get p0015 "exhaust camshaft position" timing over retarded bank 1. No longer getting that. Now just the 2A87. Will try swapping today. Already cleaned and code cake back. You figure this out?

Shot in the dark, had marbles in a can sound at cold start too expecially on deceleration and 2A87 code, found that the check valves were stuck open, after cleaning them they were totally not moving when shaken like the new ones (like "click click click" sound), and after changing them and the chain tensioner the noise went away, it's been 60k km since then
