Help! Leak on air pipe - Problem or not?

Just done a smoke test connect into pipe number 1. I've got a leak (smoke) at gasket 29. Is this unmetered air as its past the MAF?

NO symptoms/EML or bad running...

Just wondering if this is a real problem?

For the sake of only a gasket, get it sorted!

I'll be replacing that part along with part 10, and parts 15 and 16 to sort my air leaks.

Indeed its on order! Im just curious as too whether it will actually seal any better. I will retest once I have the new one..

Just noticed I do not have hose clamp 10 on the incoming turbo pipe (pipe 1) - do you? Only car the pipe has 1 torx screw to hold onto the next pipe. (the diagram isn't accurate for e9x as pipe is shown 1 is the x83 variant..)

Yeah so the parts diagram is wrong… there is no number 10 hose clamp at that location.

I think you are right.

I just looked at my car, which is the same as yours. I have also reviewed the images on Turner for parts 1 and 14 and it looks like they connect without a gasket or a clamp. I might need to take some parts apart to see whether there are any gaskets that I need. It looks like the RealOEM image might not be correct.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Realoem is incorrect for your car in that you don't have a clamp. But you definately should have a gasket at that connection.

There are some different versions of plumbing for n55's, but realoem will often use the same pictures. When looking up your particular VIN, they're usually pretty good about greying out components that aren't used on that VIN. But it looks like they failed to grey out the clamp for your VIN.

I don't have a good picture of just the gasket, but it's the ribbed black rubber peice on this aftermarket turbo inlet (gasket in the picture is stock though).

Thank you, that's mega helpful.

In that case I am thinking I'll need gaskets 15 & 29 as a minimum on the inlet side of the turbo. I don't think the actual pipe is leaking.

I already have pipe 16 for the turbo outlet. I looked at aftermarket parts, but they were too expensive for me to justify so I went with the stock pipe.

Just as an update I replaced the gasket/rubber seal and that fixed that leak.

I reran the smoke test and discovered what I though was a small leak from turbo out let pipe, however this turned out to be the waste gate opening and closing and allowing some smoke to pass. I believe this is normal operation.

Though I’d mention it in case anyone else is doing smoke testing that area!

That's great news!

I am booked in for my works on 09 March and hope that all my air leaks are sorted through replacement of parts 15, 16 and 29.

I am also replacing the wastegate actuator with a new Pierburg part and the diverter valve with an upgraded part from GFB that wasn't much more than a stock part.
